Astronomy / Space Mars One

I just heard about this today. I had a search to see if it had been mentioned on here before but, maybe due to the search engine, nothing came up.

I am pretty amazed about this. I naturally presume that it will won't happen but then you get that nagging thought, 'what if?'

The first people colonised on Mars essentially an uber version of Big Brother.

If they manage it, the first ones would be proper heroes, would they not?

So anyway, did you enter or would you have done if you had known about it?

I knew about. My first thought was I wouldn't trust my life in a first time space venture to a bunch of amateurs and reality TV producers.

Funnily enough there was pilot for a TV show with the same premise. Virtuality.. So they're not even original on that front.

Didn't know of the film either. Life imitating art eh? (and bad art at that)

The caveat of being of reality tv would kill the idea off for me, but in more general terms...

Would you take part in a 1-way mission to Mars? Leaving everything behind for chance of being remembered forever.

Quite a few space nuts and explorer types here, surely there must be someone who would be up for it or is everyone just a keyboard spaceman??

I heard about this a while ago. Personally, I would love to go and place my name in the historical archives as one of the adventurers, who fearlessly crossed the expanse of space to form a life on a new world. But the reality is very much different, isn't it. Sacrifice my freedoms for what is essentially a prison. Surviving in a hostile atmosphere that I couldn't exist in without a set amount of variables in place and any deviation from which, could end my life.
It's one way, there's no way back. It's a suicide mission and the fact you have to rely on others, who could become a hindrance via injury, mental instability and the myriad of other factors make it all the more less likely of success. Then there's maintenance of equipment and the unforeseen breakages and malfunctions. It maybe me being pessimistic about the mission, but those who go at such an early stage of our technological development are asking for trouble.

But if it was broadcast with a Big Brother approach, I'd watch. It would be the only Big Brother I would watch.

Yep, I would go without hesitation. If it was run by professionals (then I'd wonder why I was going), with properly tested equipment, procedures and a good chance of success. If the main point is just to provide a live feed for 7 billion monkeys to laugh when the ship blows up, no way.

Has anyone checked the record of successful landings on Mars?

Anyone checked the weather forecast. Dull cold with a significant chance of solar radiation.

This has to be the sickest reality show ever.' Live tonight as we see, who has suffocated in the last 24 hours!'

Wow, can't wait!
