Mars orbit beacon to commemorate Opportunity Rover.

Sagittarius Eye team concur. But we think that finally we will be able to land on planet Mars, so it would be more nice to see something like statue or the rover itself in some kind of pedestal.

Why? Opportunity was not Earth's first rover, it was not even Earth's first rover to Mars.

The first successful robotic rover from Earth to successfully land on another planetary object was the Russian Lunokhod 1 which landed on the moon on November 17, 1970.
Sojourner, part of the Mars Pathfinder program was Earth's first robotic rover to successfully land on another planet.

The only thing that is special about Opportunity was that it was apparently built much better than it needed to be and so lasted much longer than predicted.

Opportunity kept going for almost 15 years. That's a long time for a rover with a 3-month mission. Opportunity discovered signs of freshwater on Mars, supporting the idea that Mars may have been Earth-like. Opportunity holds the record for the most-travelled rover on any extra-terrestrial body. Oppy also found the first meteorite on Mars, and so did do something first. We all adore Opportunity. Even if one considered these reasons to 'not be enough', why should a rover, or anything/anyone for that matter, have to be special to deserve a memorial? I say Oppy deserves a memorial!

+1 for me as well. Expected to run for 90 days. Ran well beyond the engineering specs. Limpet manufacturers could learn a thing or two from this little guy.

13th of February 3305 was 1286 anniversary of the Mars rover "Opportunity" farewell ceremony.
This amazing part of ancient technology was designed to probe Mars for 90 days in 2003, but did that for almost 15 years!
Today it can be found in the centre of the first human colony on Mars. 07 little one!

Am I alone in thinking that the Mars Rover; Opportunity deserves a beacon orbiting Mars, in the Sol system?
Designed for just over 90 standard Earth days of activity, Oppy worked for 14 years.
A great step in our exploration of the Galaxy, deserving of a memorial.

I would go a step further and position a spot on Mars flashing every 90 seconds to commemorate the Rover.

I am so sorry I can only rep you once for that. Have a few extra. That was sweet. +1 +1 +1 +1

+1 to this. But I also like the idea with a pedastle and reminders for other rovers until we can visit them on planets.

+1 to the idea of memorials for rovers and other scientific equipment on any planatery body other than Earth. But what about the Hubble? How would we make a memorial for it? Nav Beacon?
