Mass Effect 3 Song The Catalyst in Dev Diary 3?

It’s unlikely that FDev has done anything illegal, or even intentional. The song is probably stock music, which is very common in all sorts of media productions.

A large company like FDev or EA would buy huge portfolios of stock music, but the music licenses wouldn't necessarily grant exclusivity to either company.

I deal with stock music in my own job quite frequently.

FWIW: The actual song is called “Wake Up” by Sam Hulick.

Doubt it is stock music as such if it is on Mass Effect 3 original soundtrack album. Sam Hulick is also pretty big name video game composer. But yeah, it could still be licensed, most probably is.

(Though I guess you could say it's stock music if it has been sold to a music library database, but clearly it has been originally written for ME3, which would make it music from Mass Effect 3).

I also doubt this is stock music, because it is a soundtrack of Mass Effect 3. If we can get an official response that would put concerns to rest.

Probably is not a solid answer. EA will find out about it.

Yeah we’re more or less in agreement.

“Stock” is just semantics. The point is that the track, regardless of its origin, was almost undoubtedly sold into a music library database — as you rightfully said. After that, the license would have been sold to FDev (along with hundreds or thousands of other songs in their portfolio.)

It’s also worth noting that FDev’s sound department and communications department aren’t idiots. They already know the nuances of music copyright law. As such, they would not be the sort of people to rip random music from the internet in the first place... much less stuff clearly associated with EA properties.

@Cosmo I doubt you’ll get an “official” response on this. If you see the music quietly replaced in the next few days you’ll have your answer.

Maybe its a hint? I hope that Fdevs took some inspiration from mass efect series, it does have tons of weapons and many are well designed with huge variety how to use them. In fact, lots of weapons looks kinda similar to few from mass efect. Laser weapons looks in design a lot like they would be angara made from andromeda for example.

If we can get sniper rifle that works like geth javelin from me3, then it gonna be instant my favorite one :)

M-300 claymore as shooty would be nice to have too.

About soundtrack yea, sounds almost same but there is few slight diffrences.

On a different note, if I were the one to have noticed this, my first response would be to contact FDev about it directly.
The last thing I would do would be posting it on the forums here. What good would that do to anybody?

Ah yes, it gets OP some attention. I seem to keep forgetting I'm on the internet here.

Favourite weapon of the series there! Very satisfying headshotting Phantoms with it.

I liked the super quick reload on the N7 Valiant myself. To each their own.

Also yes, that is totally the catalyst playing there. Made me smile to here it, but I do hope they got permissions because it sounds good and would hate for them to have to take it out.

Don't know if it's identical or not, copyright or not; but I think it's ironic given how several reviews on the latest dev diary made Mass Effect comparisons.

Either a big coincidence, or Frontier are doing some superb subliminal messaging / programming. Hey Frontier, would you kindly stop that? ;)

Yep, snap phase ammo on it and have fun one shooting anything apart of big health baddies, even on plat :)

Another godly sniper as well.
Incedry ammo with incinerate and along reload-cancel rapid fire can makes things go melt.

But nothing beats Geth infiltlaror with m-300 claymore with extra ammo clips and smart choke, with drill rounds. Hunter mode gives makes spread even more tight, enough to score headshots across any map. Reload cancel makes it rapid fire, it does more DPS than anything else in multiplayer.
Too bad it cant be used in campain, on its multiplayer, only there one can play as geth.

Wouldn't be the first time a custom, highly recogniseable signature theme from somewhere later made it into a stock library, or were otherwise further licensed -- I've heard e.g. the Kadish's Gallery theme from Uru, in several contexts unrelated to the game - don't get me started on the ridiculous proliferation Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna, from Requiem for a Dream, had for a while :7.

I'm very much fine with people like Tim Larkin, and Sam Hulick getting an extra buck or two out of their work, and it reaching more ears -- Can't let Two Steps from Hell, and Kevin MacLeod, corner the commercial and royalty free markets respectively, all by themselves . :7

I didn't even notice ANY music playing in the video I was watching, let alone compare a snippet section of music to the music from another game that I also wouldn't have noticed even if I watched that🤷‍♂️

Although soloing plat with it is a bit more effort than cheesing it with the Acolyte and geth flamer.

Anyway, the music - I assume that Frontier is licensing music when they want to use it. They had David Bowie on the Odyssey trailer after all and that's hardly going to go unnnoticed.

Tbh all sci-fi music producers are just trying to sound like Vangelis.

On a serious note, I’m sure FDev will have licenced the music if it is the same track.
