Mass of software

Depends on the method of storage and the nature of the medium.

Using run length techniques, the heaviest would be either alternating bits or random data - depending on the precise methods used.
Assuming SSD? Just want to make my laptop lighter to carry, should I overwrite unused parts of the disk with 0s or 1s? Or...?

Depends on the file system used to at least some degree. However, in that precise context there would be no net effect - you still have to carry the same weight regardless of whether it holds data or not.

In the context of "software upgrades" in ED, they seem to take the form of physical modules and are not just "loaded on to spare capacity of an existing device".
