Master Brabens' closing statement from the Reddit AMA today. 11/4/17

Atmospheric planets does not equal planets with life. :)

First step is to release planets like Mars and maybe Venus (which is probably a bit more complex), along with gas giants. All of these will be the next batch of landable planets Frontier release.

Planets with life are much further away.

I think its an issue of hardware as well.

With this game on Consoles (even with the new PS4 4k and XBone 4k) there is a processor cieling and with Brabens demand for high quality (which i personally agree with and respect) i think the high CPU/GPU demanding worlds with life and atmosphere are a while away yet.

But Barren Atmposphere worlds... that i dont expect to be a long way off.

Im betting Barren Atmosphere and Space legs be season 3.

Why do i get worried when I hear this kind of corporate talk?

Why do you I wonder?
FD is building the biggest game universe ever seen.
Of course that must be exciting for them.
It is exciting for me too.
Currently ED is the only high quality spacesim in town and it might stay that way for a while yet.

p.s. However, space-legs if it ever happens, would be nice.

I agree, and Braben confirmed this feature will come eventually.
I am especially curious about the ability to do spacewalks.
I hope FD will add some cool atmospheric spacesuit gameplay for that.

Thank you so much for everyone that took part.
It's great to see so many people participating on AMAs like this, and watching our live streams.
Speaking of which, I'm now off to appear on our live stream with Ed at about 2pm BST.
The future for Elite Dangerous is very exciting, including a whole raft of incredible features, yes including 'space legs' but so many more things too. We have such a great community, and we're really glad that you guys share our passion and support us.

Rafts in 2.4 confirmed!!

My conspiracy theory is that they're moving away from "season" passes and "pay upfront for content later" type stuff because it frees them up to stop working on Elite at any time. With Horizons, they have no choice but to keep working on the game until they've delivered some version of each headline feature that is pegged to the 4 point updates. If they failed to deliver those updates they could get into legal trouble and might have to refund money. Now that there are no seasons or upfront payments for anything, they can rapidly scale down their team or even stop development altogether if DLC sales aren't high enough or if the general cashflow from Elite becomes unfavorable.

Or maybe they got tired of the endless whining and complaining, and its just easier to get paid upon delivery? Basically Seasons is an endless 'pre-order' system which is great if you're strapped for cash but not so great if you have the cash and want to be flexible.

PS4 Pro and XBox Scorpio are miles beyond min specs for pc. We'll have a PC Master Race uprising long before the console plebs start noticing demands have been increased. :p

I agree, they are different games with different focuses (and I enjoy both :) ). My point was that both E: D and NMS were full games on release, and they have been improved with updates after release. I've no comment on the other game that was mentioned. :D

Don't know about NMS, but ED wasn't a full game at release, and it wasn't supposed to be.
It was barebone with a lot of placeholders, and everyone knew about that, it was supposed to be a work in progress release, and its supporters were always under the supposition of future improvement.
Just to point that out, saying it was a complete game sounds like impling that all the future improvements were/will be a bonus

Space Legs!!! Woot.

I worry about this, you can spend a literal ton of dev time and money on this and still end up with a shallow experience. I hope it works out well but I am concerned really only Mass Effect has achieved this so far and that is an entirely different game which cost a fortune to produce.

That's the banana at the end of the string...... Don't believe it. Many of their bananas were already crushed. This may be their last banana on a string.

But reading up on the latest. All the banana and scam talk aside. FD desperately wants to make up for those early mis-steps. Let's see where it goes, and what becomes of it.
