Found the issue now. When I looked at steam it said the launcher was already running (which it wasn't). Restarted PC and all good.

Just got this error. Never had anything like it before, game was rock solid (1 or 2 crashes only in 2+ years) What happened?

It's the network connection. ED is extremely finnicky with packet loss or something like that. I've played multiplayer FPS for months via PowerLAN and never had an issue; but with ED even in Solo mode I kept getting Mauve Adders without end. So I grudginly drew a Cat7 cable through the flat and lo, haven't had a Mauve Adder since. Switched back to PowerLAN to verify: Mauve Adder. So Cat7 it is.
