Maxed out Cobra or Average Asp?

I like the Cobra better - the way it flies.

Sure ASP is a more rounded ship, but Cobra is where it's at with E : D for me - I have about 100M and am going back to the Cobra, if I fly for my own enjoyment.

Something else to consider is utility mounts. They don't sound very important and i think they are sometimes overlooked but there are things that go on them that can't be mounted internally. I think that a point defence tuttet, chaff launcher and a KWS are essential but I can put all three on an Asp and have room for a shield booster or an ECM module or perhaps another point defence turret. The Asp just has more options.

I disagree that it handles like a whale, well maybe compared to a Cobra and if you tend to boom and zoom rather than turn and burn then turning performance isn't quite as important as firepower. You just fly and fight differently in an Asp. And you always have the option to turn off flight assist to help bring your guns onto target that bit quicker.

Hi all,

Some thoughts from the forum would be appreciated. I have always liked being a bit of a jack-of-all trades rather than a dedicated trader or explorer. I had a bank balance for an A-rated Cobra (in all the areas that matter) or to trade up to a Asp and mainly afford D-modules with a couple of around FSD and Shields. I took the latter route but am now torn as to whether I should drop back to a Cobra. I am enjoying 6 hard points and can take down enemies fairly fast but it does feel quite sluggish and I never remember being hit quite so much in my Cobra. I never tried the Cobra with all A-Modules as once I had sufficient for an average Asp I traded up (maybe too early). Any views from people who have trod the same upgrade path. And where next if I keep going upwards? Or is a maxed out Asp probably the best all rounder.

Thanks

Ellie

I had a fully A-rated Cobra which I flew until I had 10m in the bank. I bought an Asp with a little over 10m, and initially longed for the Cobra. I stuck it out, ran rares in the Asp, hung our a Nav beacons in it, and upgraded it slowly. My Cobra has been out to play a couple of times for an hour or two since I bought the Asp.

As a "Jack of all trades" the Asp is the superior ship.
If you're taking on NPCs at nav beacons or RES, it's the superior ship and the six hard points help you rip through small ships and the stronger shields help me hold my own against bigger ships.
Mine is currently 23k light years from home, kitted out as an explorer. When I come back the dilemma I face is whether I need to sell the FrEagle or my loyal Cobra to buy a Vulture. The Asp is staying in my fleet.

Cobra fan here. But I would build up your Asp. Seems being sluggish is your only concern along with getting hit so much. If you look at the stats of both, the Asp seems to be able to take a lot more abuse. But how much are you being shot up. You should adjust tactics compared to the Cobra of course, but if the end result is worse than the Cobra facing similar ships, upgrade before you sell her. She supposedly has the same agility rating as the Cobra. I personally save up enough for upgrades for any potential purchase to start off in the C rating. Right now its hard to get out of the Cobra cockpit but Im even missing the agility of the Eagle. So tactics get slightly adjusted.

I prefer to fly a multipurpose ship most of the time as well.

If it were me I'd go back to the A-rated Cobra and fly that until you could afford to buy a C-rated Asp without having to sell the Cobra. I've kept all the ships I've ever bought so that I could always go back and fly the one best suited to what I felt like doing that day, and for their varying levels of insurance should something unexpected happen to my credit balance.

If you play primarily PVE the biggest difference between them is their cargo capacity in my opinion. I've got 32 tons in my Cobra, and 80 tons in my Asp. The 80 tons makes a pretty big difference when trading rares in particular as you're more likely to be able to carry the rares the distance required for max profit. In the Cobra you'll often find yourself selling short just to make room.

Other than that they're pretty equal in my book.

In my opinion Average Asp > A Cobra, everytime. Once you have the credits from flying, fighting, exploring, buy a Cobra again, kit it, and fly it for fun when you feel like it.

Thank you so much - everyone. It is really helpful to hear a selection of views. I think on balance I will keep my Asp and upgrade it as I go. I am already at B for a few of the important things. If there is another Lugh payday I might go back and buy a Cobra to maintain as well. It has a bit of a special place in the Elite universe. The question will be whether to move on from an A-rated Asp when I eventually get there but I am not sure I'll want to in a hurry. Unless there is something new to try.

When I got the Asp, I kept my A-rated cobra. A bit later, when I happened to return to the system where it was parked, I sold it, because it just wasn't being used anymore.

The Cobra is a great ship, but the Asp offers more versatility. Sure, the Cobra may be better for some missions, but if you see such a mission, will you travel to some distant system to go pick up the Cobra? I didn't. That's why I'm in the Asp now. It's very good, superior to the Cobra in some ways, better cockpit view too. The Cobra is better in some ways too, especially speed, but it just can't come close to the versatility of the Asp. And the Asp, while not the most nimble thing ever, handles well enough for most purposes with A-rated thrusters.
