Meanwhile, in a parallel universe where the sky belongs to no man...

With NMS there was a class-action lawsuit edit: investigation by the Advertising Standards Authority. The ruling came down in Hellogames' favor. The basis of that ruling? Game devs always lie about everything and gaming advertisements are all widely recognized to be false, therefore anyone who takes a game dev on their word or expects a game to deliver on the features it showcases, is naive and wrong to expect anything.

Which is pretty sad, since it means devs can say anything they want and will never legally be held accountable. This why it's entirely up to the buying public to extensively vet devs on their credibility, and to use whatever remaining avenues they have to hold devs accountable for their actions, be that through posting reviews, petitioning the developers themselves, or simply refusing to spend money on anything that isn't already finished and working.

I don't think it's sad, games are "entertainment", it's like music, who buys music blindly? Most poeple know what kind of music they like and dislike and buy accordingly. If unsure they seek reviews of people with similar tastes. As a Metal head I don't go near rap, I even dislike it when it's shoe horned into metal to be "down with da kidz".....If I see a rapper talking that his new album is amazing and brilliant etc etc...I don't go "golly I MUST get that".

EQUALLY valid is seeing an interview with a metal band I don't know say their album is amazing and brilliant...I STILL don't go "Golly I must get that". I'll listen to it before hand every way I can and make my choices based on if I actually enjoy it.

I DID pre order NMS (I hardly EVER do that, I don't even buy games full price...usually wait for sales), based on what I saw and heard in all the vids, yeah I was a bit dissapointed it didn't look quite as good as the previews, but I've been around the block and seen that happen a LOT, so it didn't phase me.

I used to get all the CODs on release, Modern Warfare was the last full priced COD I bought.....because it's just too short a SP campaign and I refuse to support devs who skimp on SP campaign and favour MP stuff.

gods I'm rambling, getting old. I hope my point is coherent!

I think your point is that sooner or later, you have to take responsibility for your own purchasing choices, and not be sucked in by hype or marketing or what the creators say about it? In which case, I agree.

For me, X-Rebirth was the last time I pre-ordered a game. Bought that on the strength of the X series (which I love) and was horribly disappointed by what they delivered. It was so unlike Egosoft to do that. But, I made the choice, and paid the price for it. 🤷‍♀️

Ah glad it made sense to someone else!! What floats around in me noggin takes a bit of effort to get out on screen (or my mouth!).

That's why I like demo's, marketing is all well and good but the feel of a game is more important than the look or what someone decided to pop in a trailer. I use the marketing of games to decide whats worth having a closer look at, never for buying.

In ED's case there was a flyable demo, so I knew exactly what I was getting.

All X-games need a few years to get bugfixed by the early adopters before they are worth a punt. Notoriously bug-ridden, even now X-3 is still well wonky not as bad a bethesda but they come close. Haven't tried the new one yet, I'll consider it if I get a steam sale notification.

I realy, realy, realy,.....like NMS, there's tons of things to do, nice different vehicles, cool planets and it's only getting better and better and stuffed with more stuff....to do.

And yet.......

It never captivates me as ED does, ED's realism, graphics, sound, LORE!!!!!!, community and so on, they're just ticking the right boxes, most of them anyway.
No matter how gutted I may be at the lack of new engaging content, like utilizing the lore or continuation of the Thargoid/Guardian tale, etc., I always come back, be it for a longer or shorter period.

I truly hope, despite my lack of confidence in Fdev, that Odyssey will get me back in full throttle.
I'm quite enjoying myself with the current player event regarding the Dark Wheel but ED definitely needs more narrative/lore based gameplay, not just shiny features.

Well I did pre-order X-Rebirth too ;-) There was lots of vitriol around release, yet they turned the game around, maybe not as spectacularly as HG did with NMS, but still. Sure, it wasn't the X4 everyone hyped it would be (see what I did there?), but it is still a decent game. And allowed for VR version, which is always nice. Yet some people are so salty they still diss the game for the state it was on release, seven years later 😂 Fun fact - I didn't have noticeable problems with the game, but my friends had massive crashes, save-breaking bugs etc. which ultimately soured the whole experience. Since then I usually don't pre-order unless the deal is really good. Doom VFR and Skyrim VR come to mind (or was it Fallout 4 VR and not Skyrim? don't remember). Got huge discounts on these and was happy with the deal. If the games flopped, I wouldn't be that angry because value:money ratio paid would still be okay-ish (for a VR title).

Same principle applies to life in general. I don't understand people who for example buy a flat when it's nothing more than a construction site and a proverbial "hole in the ground". And yet there are people who will invest blindly, huge sums of money, mortgages etc. But I digress.

That ruling by ASA is a curious but reasonable ;-) one. Especially strong example is a "cinematic trailer" which is pure usually ;-). Well, one more to the "we do not pre-order" mantra.

I'm 71 years old and I reckon I've got a few hundred thousand hours watching tv not to mention, the advertisements. I've never in my life ever seen an advertisement that could meet let alone beat the actual product. I mean, look at the signs on the windows at a Burger King for an example. I defy anyone to receive a burger that looks like it does in the window's advertisement. Automobile's NEVER get the mileage they state they are capable of. Tis ironic how though
Advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry, not one has ever represented their product truthfully. In my 71 years, I've never ever seen or heard one true word, photo or video, depicting there proposed product true-fully Jesus, some ads even go as far as to state sometime in small print and sometime actually narrated that the actual product may not be the same as depicted.

A concept that most Ebay'ers as well as third party sales involving Amazon and such. Recently I ordered an xbox one chatpad via an Amazon third party seller. The entire page and all of the following pages one needed to go to for purchasing, showed numerous photo's and all of the descriptions were in relation to an chat pad for the XBOX controller. I received an chatpad, but it was for the PS4. The return policy that third party have isn't any where near the same as Amazon's return policy, the cost of shipping it back, isn't worth them just sending me another exactly the same.

Great to see older players, I turned 61 a while ago, been playing games since the 70's. What machine do you play on ? (pc, console)

For a couple of decades now (I'm old too, not quite as old though); I've threatened my wife next time we have to go in a fast food place like McDs or BK, I would point to the picture of the burger I want on their menu and when they bring it out (burger patty thinner than thin cut bologna) ask why it doesn't look like the burger in the picture. ... just to see how they would react, or ask for my money back.

She threatened me with divorce so I haven't done that yet. But its on my bucket list.

The pc states ASUS when booting up, is as much as a pc is a pc to me. My son ordered it, apparently the contents within the case it what makes it a "GAMINING PC". Other than knowing how to turn it on and off, an antiquated knowledge of utilizing some DOS commands and how to locate various files. I pretty much just point and click. I'm not into having the best Frame rates, I utilize a 42 inch digital tv and what ever the defaults are, seem good to me.

While at a BK once, at a time of day when it wasn't busy, I actually asked the supposed 16 year old "MANAGER" if he happen to know why the burger's severed don't look like they do in the advertisements on his windows. He stated he wasn't sure but would check on it, about half way through or dinner, the "MANAGER" came back and informed me that they utilize different cooks, and because they are not under the pressure of time, have the time to make them properly. I simply thanked him for his going out of his way to service a customers desire and set about finishing my dinner.
