Mechs!

Add them!

No reason. Other than so I can stomp things.
(Been messing around on MechWarrior 4 :p)

They'd actually fit in the game quite well thinking about it.
Base assaults made easy. Check
Ships can drop them. Check
VR friendly. Check
Can have the firepower to take on ships. Check
Outfitting for mechs is similar to ships. Check
Can stamp on things. Check
Would be hilarious in 0.01G. Check
Would also be hilarious in 9G. Check

I see no valid reason not to have them. :p

Obviously you don't need to add 30 of them, I'd be happy with a Empire, Federation and Indi version.

So, you noticed the uncanny U.I. similarities too?

Mechs are an inefficient mode of transport and only provide benefit as assisted lifting suits (like in Aliens). In a combat situation they add height for little added gain.

One of the reasons why the Mech Idea is something even actual militaries look into all the time is that they have certain advantages in terms of mobility compared to tracked vehicles. For example there are allready mechs in use in certain areas where they are used for forest work, where other vehicles are not viable, because they either can not be operated safely there or would need infrastructure with prohibiting costs.

One of the main prohibiting factors today is the amount of energy density needed to make a mech mobile enough. We neither have the reactor tech not the ability to store power in a way that would make a mech for combat operations moblie enough. Battletech/Mechwarrior mainly uses Fusion Reactors to power the Mechs.

In Elite on the other side, we have sufficient powerful and compact enough power plants that would make mechs a realistic solution. And if i look at the fighters i realy do not understand the need for a wheeled vehicle like the SRV. Some form of glider or mech would make much more sense for me.
Also, as a side note: i always was a big fan of the game Thunder Brigade and i wish someone would me some sort of remake with modern tech.

Pretty sure most of the military applications so far have been augmentation of the human body to assist (with the obvious exception of some robots that are pretty fragile at the moment). I am sure the powerplants in ED lore could be up to the job of powering a walking platform, but the same power could be used more efficiently in a tracked/wheeled vehicle.
