Medusa Tissue Sample, Tissue Sample Prices

EDIT: fail... meant to post in aliens thread

So I just managed to land a Medusa Tissue Sample... was an epic journey getting one. First recovery attempt suffered "That bug".. barely got out alive with the second launch successfully getting a sample on board. I was at 4% hull spooling FSD, barrage came through, knocked me down to 2%, heard another barrage go off... 1%... "shields online"... oh man, nearly a 10mil rebuy.

Repair bill was fun.

But worth it?

lol. Nope. Sure I had a fun time, but I sure as hell won't be doing that again anytime soon.

Surely it's about time to bump the price on this and the other tissue samples, in the context of:
- Just swiping up a Thargoid Sensor or Thargoid Probe needs no specialised equipment or serious evasion of a Thargoid, and will fetch 288 and 370k respectively
- Palin missions will fetch you up to 4-20m credits for up to 4t of items which can be recovered from a defenceless wreck or any thargoid structure with almost zero risk.

I acknowledge Cyclops tissue samples are relatively risk-free, so 50-60k may be appropriate, but the Basilisk should be at least 100-125k per sample and 200-250k per Medusa sample.

Or, how about we get some salvage missions offered by AEGIS for these samples? They could still be only worth 20k on the black market as "Nobody has any real use or need for them", but AEGIS missions could offer 500k-2m, just like black box salvage missions in the bubble, tonnage dependent.

Nice!

Got mine earlier using a cool running DBX. After coping with the RNG of NHSS content and Limpet functionality I came away with a sample with zero damage - it's worth a go (though I can only run two collectors on a DBX, and no shields ). Took 2 hours to get an NHSS with the right conditions :(

I found the trick with the limpets was to open the cargo hold between the 2 limpets returning - that way I always got 1 of the samples. (I still lost 2 ships due to popping into the NHSS too close to the Thargoid - they don't like that, and my cold ship doesn't go fast...)

Frontier struggle to place 'value' on time spent. The most laborious things, have nonsensical returns.

Took some time out from rescuing NPCs to try and get some Medusa Tissues. Nice to see the limpets are working this time.

Oh, zero damage with a cool running Cobra Mk. IV. Medusa appeared both times I found a NHSS but the first one flew away before the limpets finished. Lots of debris second time so had a good 5 mins to get the samples.

Wow, people are already finding Medusas?

So disappointed that FDev couldn’t think up a new design. Just the regular old Cyclops with a ship kit and an unpleasant disposition.

i’m beginning to think the Thargoids have contracted Aston Martin syndrome. All their ships look pretty much the same, but with different names and tiny aesthetic tweaks that don’t really change much.

Thanks, that's what I assumed - they are so unreliable it is easy to get a couple that work and not see the issue. I know FD have stealth fixed other things recently (basilisk logograms) so wondered if they had done this as well.

Nice job. I'm familiar with the cool-running tactic... I'd still stick by my pricing estimates since:
- I prefer a tanking fit, since it makes the Thargoid hang around longer. With that I could get at most 16 samples from a Cyclops^, 12 from a Basilisk^, but you face the hefty repair bill, or worse risk rebuy.
- You'll be struggling to get more than 6 with a practical cool-running fit before it jumps out... this is a problem given the next point;
- I can't speak for you, but I had to wade through about a dozen Threat 5/6 NHSS spawns before getting a Threat 7, and even then I only got the Medusa actually appearing in half the spawns.

^ Assuming the bug gets fixed one day.

As mentioned in the community goal.

This is how i was able to get tissue samples without thargoid taking any notice

Approach NHSS level 7
Disable shields and power distributor
Drop into signal source.
let thargoid approach
Scan it, target it and deploy heatsink
Fire limpets at ship
Disable thrusters and any other none essential power draining modules eg weapons
sit back and wait. firing occasional heat sink to keep temperature down. This should be easy with many modules switched off. Please note that your ship will run hotter closer to hot stars eg O B A class stars
open cargo bay
retrieve samples.
Wait for thargoid to jump out.
Enable all modules.
Hand in samples.

Ultimately this is how i think we will defeat them. We will need to deploy bio weapons and deposit them using limpets. The thargoid wont know its been infected .

Thanks, but I'm familiar with the technique, and prefer tank-collecting. Provided your tank is holding (which it isn't against a medusa atm, but not the Basilisk or Cyclops, and that's fine) you'll collect far more samples than you would in a single instance cold-running. To get bang for buck for your time spent, you need to hit multiple NHSS, and that massively increases the risk of a hatch failure loosing your samples all over the joint (especially if you slip up with the heat management).

Nonetheless, the payoff for the effort required collecting the samples is very disproportionately low, regardless of if you're tanking or cold-running
