Menu's and fonts.

Hi guys I have taken most of this from a post I made on reddit about the issues I have with the DK2, this largely sums up what I am having the most issues with in the game if you discount the galaxy map.

Most of my issues are with the menus. I can read the centre of the menu just fine but the further away it goes the harder to read, this doesn't help when a lot of the menus are on the left of the screen. In steam they have a VR menu that is curved around, I would suggest doing something similar for the front menus so they are easier to read. Curved monitors are meant to be really nice to use so why not use that in VR? I realise that the final version will be higher resolution but there are a lot of DK2's out there and people will want to have a go on them. Perhaps a profile for each type of headset would work better? There isn't exactly a big market to cater to and it would improve the gameplay experience immensely.

Ability to centre vision for left and right side menus - when you look at the menu sometimes to keep it up you have to look through part of the DK2 that is blurry because you need to look through the centre of the lens in order to focus on an object clearly. If you put the clear part on the menu item you want to see, it closes. I suggest a button that will say "when I let go of this button i will be looking at the centre of the menu" and it will stay up as long as you hold the button, then when you let go its set. I would also like to see a distance slider for the side menus, they seem quite far away and that just makes them harder to read. Alternatively a zoom button might help?

Larger font on supercruise timer and perhaps some other fonts on the main display, once again I believe a profile needs to be made or perhaps a slider on font size? I realise that the final version of the rift will be higher resolution and I will get one when it comes out, but that might be over a year away and they have already stated that they will not be releasing another development kit, even if the final version of the rift comes out next week there will still be a lot of DK1 and 2's out there being used. If there was some kind of menu or font customisation it would make the game much more immersive, currently I am having to play on monitor until I get a trade run worked out then swap to the rift to play for a bit, I also tend to overshoot my targets sometimes because I cant read the timer.

Other than that it is very immersive and I have an incredibly fun but ultimately frustrating time.

How are you all doing with it?

It's just a combination of the optics and the resolution. There's not much to be done about it with the DK2. I'm sure there will be some kind of fix for the consumer release. The only software issue in the UI though is it placing menus into peripheral vision, forcing a somewhat extreme head turn to centre them in the view to get the best from the optics. There's a "sweet spot" isn't there. Again it works very well on a monitor and most people will be playing with that for now (Rift is "experimental" isn't it).

I think the readability issues could be relatively easily solved with a simple font tweak for DK2 users. Something heavier, bolder and/or larger

That may be true, but there are 100,000 Rifts out there right now that will be the only devices to play Elite Dangerous in VR for perhaps a year or so. The first comment I have had from every single person I have showed the game to is "It's cool but I cant read anything".

What are your settings, do you have the Oculus Detail bar (at the bottom of the graphics settings) all the way to the right? If not you will find it very hard to read any text.

The menues are what kind of breaks the VR experience for me at the moment. Trying to figure out what is what in navigation UI or sometimes even the commodities market puts a very heavy strain on my eyes...to the point I had bloodshot eyes after 2 hours of play yesterday.

I tried most settings I could find around the net except supersampling but I guess my GPU lacks the oomph for that anyway.

It'll be hard to play without the Rift but I guess I have no choice for now if I want to play Elite at all.

I have the same problem. Though I spent most of my time in the Rift playing ED, I tried out some other demos the other day like Titans in Space and the text in those is much more readable. I wonder if Frontier are rendering text using distance fields or some other technique that works well on monitors but is causing problems in the Rift? More to the point, I wonder if it goes away with Crescent Bay or the higher resolution Rift that will come next year.

Although the readability could be better two small tricks to help are

1. Move your head position to get closer to the menus, both forward and laterally. Yeah its kind of obvious, and yes you can be somewhat restricted based on the distance from you to the rift camera but it does work. Of course with something like the commodity market its impossible to have the whole thing in focus at one time so I do find myself having to physically move around quite a bit to get the text clear. Generally though I've found that while the resolution of some text is difficult to read, having played for many hours I can now recognize text ( position, shape etc) so often don't actually need to read it specifically.

2. When you reset the rift, push or move your head back about 6 inches to where it would normally be. This means in your normal position you'll be closer to the menus/panels and it helps avoid clipping through your body or the chair when you turn 180 degrees. THis also appears to help with keeping the side panels active when looking around them. Previously I felt I was always fighting to keep the panel enabled when trying to read or look at information toward the edges of it.

One thing to keep in mind is i'm pretty sure the overall quality of menus/panels changes based on which ship you are in. I'm sure text has become easier to read since getting my Cobra vs the Hauler and Sidewinder before it. Keep meaning to actually test it out but as its so much hassle to sell ships then rebuy and refit them I haven't got round to it.

One other thing i've notcied but not heard anyone else talk about is that I cannot get the rift perfectly aligned vertically to my face. When I put it on its natural fit is a few millimeters lower than its ideal, which puts a faint blur above everything and is especially noticeable on text, it appears like a drop shadow but along the top of text rather than the bottom. If I place my hand beneath the rift and push it up slightly this blur disappears and increases overall sharpness, however i've found no method to make this permanent with the current strap design. I think what is really needed is to be able to make slight adjustments to the vertical position of the lens, I don't think adjusting anything else will fix it.

Just wanted to pick up on this point as it matches my experience with my DK2.

I initially spent a lot of time playing with settings, straining my eyes and constantly shifting position, whilst also feeling a little frustrated with the text readability. However, I find the more I play the less it matters as my brain adjusts to the environment, and can often skip trying to actually read the blobs.
