What about those mysterious ships that we were supposed to get with merc order? And I don't mean eagle.

They have had 25 ships that were planned for development since the kickstarter. However, not all of those are currently released. We know what a few of the upcoming ones are, but not all yet. When they were nearing release, they announced they were going to add another five ships to that list after the original 25 were released, bringing the total planned ship count up to 30. Those last five ships are the same ones which the beta backers will get to choose a free ship from. Currently they are at 17 ships, with at least two more coming in the next patch. On top of that, the Federal Corvette, Dolphin, Beluga Liner, and Panther Clipper are planned for development. Given that they have been releasing about two ships a major update, chances are it will be a while before we get to those last five. I am guessing that for the upcoming major patches, we will get the Beluga and Dolphin alongside passenger missions and stuff, and then the Federal Corvette and an Imperial counterpart in an update that adds some of the features talked about for larger ships, like crewmembers, multiple shields covering zones, and possibly more in depth hull damage. A bit wishful thinking, but that seems to be the most logical way to group them up. Then again, ships have never really related to the update they released with.

Just a point on this sentence. I recall the wording to be along the lines of "the backers will get one of the 5 new ships". That to me doesn't necessarily mean they get to choose. As one of those backers it would be interesting to find out but to be honest by the time we see those ships I expect to have so much money in the bank that buying one outright in the game will be trivial, which means it's not really much of a perk.

I seem to remember there being a choice of one of the ships, but it has been so long I can't say for sure. Still, point remains that even at the very fastest, we can't expect these ships any sooner than four months from now, more likely somewhere between five and six months away, assuming they keep putting out ships in batches of two, and there are between one and two months between major patches, with six ships left after Powerplay comes out. As for me, I don't play this game nearly as often as I would like, so chances are this will end up being a fairly substantial bonus. Plus, there are other things to consider, such as the possibility that these ships are somewhat special, like faction specific, or tied to certain events for normal acquisition, and acquiring them may not simply be a matter of having enough money. There isn't any indication of that being so, but there is a bit of precedence, both in the previous games and with the faction specific ships currently in game, so it is a possibility. One I would actually be in favor of. Having a few ships or items which have special means of acquisition, though still ensure anyone can get one if they take the right steps, would definitely make things more interesting.
