I preordered the Mercenary Edition and lo and behold my extras are available. It doesn't really make sense that Alpha backers wouldn't have this stuff first. But, thats life I guess.
The screensavers were my favorite, especially the hyperspace one. The wallpapers weren't anything fantastic, and I'm not going to use the ringtones and themes. In game, the sounds don't bother me, but they'd drive me nuts on my phone or as windows themes day-in and day-out.
I also tried out the free original Elite in the store.... I play lots of old Atari and Nintendo games, but if I hadn't grown up with them I probably wouldn't play them at all. I didn't play Elite as a kid, so the nostalgia factor doesn't weigh in here. I'm sorry, but I couldn't play it... just too old. I got to give the sound effects credit, though. Primitive, but felt right for the game and unique for the time.
In the end, the Mercenary Edition extras turned out how I expected them; a couple cool things, but mostly stuff I'll never mess with again. Oh well... at least I got a free eagle out of it, and paid $10 less than the release price.
