Met My First Hacker Today

It's not "trivially easy" if you sit outside the endpoint. You have to break into the endpoint too, and while obviously you can do that, you have to do a lot more work.
Your game client is an endpoint and as such, you have complete control over it.

How does hacking even work in this game? Is the data for players not server side?

I'm not a hacker nor do I know much about that but I know how cheat engine works and such and generally speaking that doesn't work on say an MMO.

So what the heck is happening and why didn't they code it properly to prevent it?

With a P2P setup you will never protect the game. It is impossible as you no longer control the client and what it is allowed to do. This is an absolute truism that is proven over and over through the history of online gaming.

There is one hope and one hope only of building a MMO game that is secure and enjoyable for the customer, and that is to bring it all back to the server farm and leave nothing meaningful in the hands of the client. A good rule of thumb for any MMO game designer is to view the workstation as Hell, and the end user as the Devil. The only way you keep your virtual house free from their evil is by not allowing them in the door to start with.

Just to add one thing, I've seen a lot of this weird stuff going on in the stations around Lave - dumbfire missiles all over the place, groups of players hanging around inside the station docking bay, and sometimes being blown up when I tried to leave.

The one thing I've also seen that I didn't seem mentioned here is that several times in the last few days I saw the station defences constantly firing at nothing, like there was an invisible ship there.

Well CMDR <snip> is the culprit here, sitting in George Lucas in Leesti, I saw him camped in the station, was attached at the entrance and my autodock failed. Pulled back out of range and waited. I saw the station pound this guy as he left the station and he flew right past me, I turned to give chase and fired a few direct hits but no effect. He then jumped away. I tried to dock again and the same thing happened. I think I ran into mines or something as I exploded on entering the station. The report - Killed by CMDR <snip>. What a sorry excuse for a human being. Tried to report via the correct channels but I think its busted, the game crashed. Unless its his P2P hack preventing reporting, who knows. So developers, take a look it happened in the last 15mins. Kick this loser out of the game.

Isn't there a rule about naming and shaming???

There is no server besides matchmaking and market data synchronization.

Simply not true, you and others in this thread are talking in terms of hacking being undetectable and whilst ED remains outside of a streaming service it probably is, but if it were to engage PB then detecting hacks his fairly simple. The blockers that people talk about are easily dealt with, kicking people for the service being unable to scan the game files has long been the answer.

I really should reply with quote to cater for the possibility that someone may post whilst I'm typing...

Maybe there is but the shame is on this player for doing what he does. Leesti is a no go area and that should not be allowed to happen. FD NEEDs to do something, if nothing else they need to respond to this. Instead of ignoring the problem. Another poster is right, this forum is better patrolled that the game.

Why can't they have moderators within the game, just like they have moderators on the forums. Those moderators could take on the role of police. They could even be disguised as NPCs. They could then ban badly behaved players based on the observations of these moderators. You should be able to observe pretty quickly whether someone is employing some kind of hack, and video it if necessary? i.e. if you are hitting them but they are taking no damage etc etc

The problem, and great failing, with that approach is that you still allow the game to be hacked in the first place (because it is still P2P). Punkbuster and the like are a bandaid on a sucking chest wound and will never slow the flow of cheats. And they most definitely will not stop it. Granted, it is better than doing absolutely nothing, which is where the game is at now.

I'm getting tired of this now

I can name a couple of other games they were in the same situation (Dayz for one) who ignored the problem and said nothing to the community in the early stages

They said their game was hard to hack.....hours.....hours! Hours after release hacks started to appear and they continued to say they hacking wasn't possible and that things like invincibility were not possible yet
countless reports of them coming in from players said they were

They still say to this day that hackers are few and far between but they are not

FD need to do something

There is NO logical reason to go and <snip> every name if they are suspected hackers, if they are known hackers or are found out to be hackers then leave the name there

But for the love of god give us something, because I gurrantee in a couple of monthes this game will be dead, I've seen in happen before in other games that had great potential

Maybe you are activity fighting it, but the following things are giving the worst impression possible

1. Snipping posts, if you investigate them and find they are hacking, create a sticky and say this player was found hacking and was banned, there gives is some much needed moral boosting (if they are banned there is no reason to not name and shame, perhaps it unethical and it's not illegal, let them be known)
At the very least keep track of hackers banned and give us a number updated once a week, so we know SOMETHING is actually happening

2. No response to the situation, a simple "we are working on it in secret and not releasing any information on what we are doing to prevent information leaks" is fine, right now the message you are giving is "it's ok to hack, we are ignoring it"
If hackers don't see anything being done, they will think it's going unpunished

3. Let us have access on out account via download the last 5mins of game logs, like damage taken, by what weapon Ect as well as our opponents so if the workload is too much we can at least say "yeah he was hacking" and give high priority to those submitting the reports of hackers if we can say we found something it will speed up the process

I really do think that an honourable "Anything Goes" private group will end up being the answer.

Basically, it's open play - but if you get caught cheating, with proof, of course, you're out.

You are free to trade, explore, pirate - even murder, if you like. So long as you do it without cheats or exploits...

Z...

peer to peer.....lol such a poor choice for game architecture for so many reasons. Trying to skimp on money by not having game servers.. Too bad,... the visuals in the DK2 are so awesome, but the game is weak. I live on the east coast of the USA and even though I am only a few hours from boston, I had no interest in going and repping this game.... that makes me sad, because I really thought this game was going to be great. i hate the peer to peer set up, i hate that open and solo play share the same universe. I don't know how they'll solve the hacking problem.... I looked it up online,...pretty simple to do really . Anyway,...lots of wasted potential so far in this game.

I said it before and I will say it again. ED was meant to be a VERY SOLID single player only game!

FD made a bad choice to go multiplayer without the proper equipment to do it.

Pretty spot on. The lack of communication from a company is most alarming and problematic. I have been gaming a long time and dealt with lots of companies..and not once when a situation like this was going on did it end well. The game could very well die very quickly.

If they prove me wrong..I would be pleased.. but the lack of response is...well..it sucks.
