Meta-Alloys

So I fancied getting one of these caustic launchers, so as there is little information in the game as to how to do this I have done my googling, and discovered I need a Corrosion Resistant Cargo Rack. Which means I need 16 meta-alloys, way too many to get the 1 you can allegedly pop at a time from Maia.

So again, I googled because the game doesn't tell you jack, and discovered this: https://canonn.science/codex/ripe-barnacles/

Ripe Barnacles, which I can supposedly shoot to get the bits I need. I've been to a few, and all the spikes around them are smashed with nothing to lock onto and shoot.

I am now stuck. Out of a galaxy of 400 billion stars, how do I know which system and planet to go to to get Meta Alloys?

When you look in the Pleiades there are almost all Barnacle sites already harvested. One possibility is the Coalsack-Nebula where you can find still untouched Barnacles. Or you search for a carrier that sells them but that can be expensive.

Don't bother with barnacles for meta-alloys. Most of them will either be barren or will crash the game (ongoing issue since last December).
Instead, go to a thargoid surface site. Use the civilisation filter on the galaxy map and look around the Pleiades area for any thargoid systems to find them.
Most surface sites will have around five meta-alloys, collect them all then relog until you have enough.

Thats also a great idea! And when you have not seen a Thargoid site yet its a rather spooky and cool experience.

Just recently gathered Meta-alloys on my alt at HIP 16171 C 1 site 3 had no problems getting them there.
Then jumped back to the bubble and didn't check my route... entered a Thargoid-controlled system, managed to evade hyperdiction, got caustic damage from a scout on jumping out of the system and could not work out how to burn it off and blew up, losing my meta-alloys :(
So make sure you check your route back!

Oh wow, that sucks. Thanks for the system tip, I'll take a look.

Alternatively, numerous Fleet Carriers stock Meta Alloys and the other two required commodities; you can purchase them directly, but it'll be expensive (a few ten million CR).

INARA has a commodity search function that looks through Fleet Carrier stock to make this easier (though you have to set "Include Fleet Carriers" to yes): https://inara.cz/elite/commodities/

You don't necessarily need a corrosion resistant cargo rack...It's just a ticking clock before your cargo hatch fails if you don't have one (Or you can stash your stuff on a carrier if you have one)
If your still struggling to find Meta alloys @Dash when you read this - feel free to add me in-game, and I can give them to you (Although as TobiasFuzz says - the barnicle sites are definitely worth a visit, atleast once) o7

This is how I did it my first time gather stuff from the Maelstroms. Equip an AFMU and keep an eye on your cargo door's integrity.

Pretty sure meta-alloys are not corrosive and don't require a special cargo rack - in fact they are needed in order to unlock the corrosion-resistant cargo racks.

Meta alloys are not corrosive - and are required to unlock the Corrosion Resistant Cargo Rack...
But Caustic Tissue Samples are corrosive, and are required to unlock the Caustic Sink Launcher.

To update, I tried some more on the list and finally found a barnacle site that was ripe. Did the relog grind (yay, gameplay) and watched the interceptors do their thing. I've got my cargo rack, will go for the tissue samples next, just doing some non-thargoid grinding trying to restock on "common" materials that I can never seem to find without extensive use of external tooling.

If you don’t have a decontamination limpet controller then you superheat your ship to burn it off. Just switch to silent running, and keep boosting so you overheat while listening for “caustic substance removed”, there Will also be text top right of screen. It’s pretty scary but as soon as it’s burnt off switch back to normal running and pop a heat sink if you have on, you’ll cool down quickly even without a heatsink.

Burn it off ppl!
quick silent mode + boosts + frameshift activation S ( but stop short of actually going into supercruise, & repeat - multiple RAPID heat boosts ) , gets you upward of 200% heat pretty quickly.

That removes caustic damage from caustic missiles/environments.

It doesn't prevent the corrosive effect of cargo, which is a periodic hit of damage to a random module, and unrelated to caustic damage.

Meta-alloys aren't corrosive cargo though... but they are highly likely to fall out of a malfunctioning cargo hatch if you cook your ship to burn off caustic (or the other thing noobs have a habit of doing: charging FSD while still next to a star).

I believe OP is (was?) ultimately after the Caustic Launcher o7
