I'll need a new PC to truly enjoy MSFS 2020 in VR. Someday! Someday.....

My goodness, I can't even fathom this game in VR with ultra settings. It might be better that I don't go down that path - my wife will never see my face again if I do!
Those goggles might be the last thing you will ever see...

With the news that Odyssey will support VR in cockpits / SRV, I will highly likely be getting a Reverb G2 some way down the line. I was considering getting it just for MSFS. May indeed need a new PC too (i7, GTX1080, but it's a few years old now). That news hasn't prompted me to get back into ED yet, and I doubt I'll ever go back to the levels I had been playing - unless the actual content that arrives with Odyssey is more involving than what we currently have. Only so may tons of cargo I can deliver and pirates that I can kill... :)

On an MSFS note, continued the USA bush trip last night, heading to another dirt landing strip, and again (as from my post #2,201), the detail of the dirt strip is completely absent and it is simply indicated by a slightly darker / yellowy patch of land. In the main game, I have landed at a grass strip before that showed in proper detail - I play on high settings. Even though the PC is a bit old, I don't think it's struggling, but perhaps it is... Has anyone else done this bush trip, and were the dirt strips properly displayed? They look great - and challenging - in the pictures of them.

I think most of us would need a new PC just to be able to enjoy MSFS with full ultra settings even in 2D.

If you don't mind waiting a bit, the new RTX 30xx nvidia card series are due to be released in the upcoming months, rumour is that the performance jump from their previous generation cards will be insane, and that the prices will be similar to the RTX 20xx generation cards.

Yes indeed. I understand that the 1080 is minimum spec for getting the full resolution of the Reverb G2, so I imagine that to get decent performance from MSFS I'll at least need to upgrade the card. And perhaps ED too. Will certainly be cheaper than a new PC and could well be the way I will end up going.

I'm using a mix of high and ultra on a 1080p display, and it looks amazing, and I get acceptable to good framerates, too! However, there is ZERO headroom for VR. ED I can crank to ultra and have lots of CPU & GPU to spare, but when I put on the Oculus, I have to dial back a few settings and still end up maxing out my GPU. I know that I'll be lucky if MSFS works in low settings on my humble Rift, let alone a HMD with higher res.

That's okay, I like having a sim that I can "grow into", knowing that the promise of AMAZING is within reach.

Yup, RTX 3070 is the same price as a 2070 super at $499. RTX 3080 is the same as the 2080 super at $649. I've got 2 x SLi 2070 supers in my machine now...due to getting one of them ultra cheap and selling the old GTX 1080ti to buy the second with the SLi kit...and still ended up with spare change.

Only thing is that the double 2070's take up 6 slots on the back of my PC case and I now need a JCB to lift it off the floor... veritable bricks of cards, even compared to the 1080ti.

Wait until the graphics cards are the size of Cray supercomputers...with greater power and cooling requirements. :(

Have you been to Vanuatu yet? Just checked it on Bing, and I wonder how Flight Sim captures this inferno. :)

Yes :}

That is the volcano in Ambrym island, correct? One of the coolest volcano videos on youtube is precisely in that location:

Sadly back in 2018, in what became a very sad year for volcanophiles due to severla of the very few permanent lava lakes on earth disappearing, a flank eruption on that exact volcano caused a partial collapse of it's gargantuan sized caldera and the 2 lava lakes inside, Marum and Benbow, were buried in the landslide and are no longer visible.

Sadly, the other star volcano in Vanuatu, Mount Yasur, is just plain awful in MSFS, and the fact that the game tends to put vegetation (or trees) on top of volcanoes makes it look even worse.

White island volcano in New Zealand is also terrible in MSFS. My experience so far is hit and miss, some volcanos are horribly depicted, some others are very good. The game seems to work best in general with the larger volcanos (as they're more easily identifiable as volcanos), the smaller ones seem to be handled mostly like hills and get covered in grass or trees, their edges are smoothened, and sometimes even have ponds, making them look ridiculous..

Speaking of volcanos, this is me, moments before crashing into Fogo Peak in Cape Verde, while trying to descend through the clouds into the island:

The end... But those clouds ❤ They can make me crash any day.

For reference, this is Fogo peak (screenshots from a different flight):

Okay, first, that is epic but most importantly second - now I'm going to have to go and find out how clouds interact with the terrain. (My bet is not at all - they just mesh, but it would be awesome to see some rolling and flowing)

I think there may be some... Can't say for clouds, but flying over mountains I seem to get the odd updraft, very noticeable in the smaller planes.

Can't say for sure, but a good place to check if out will be mountainous oceanic islands, (like the Fogo island in Cape Verde on my screenshots). Other great candidates in the atlantic, is Pico island in the Azores islands, and Tenerife and La Palma islands on the Canary islands.

Speaking of La Palma and clouds, if you don't know this already, they have a frequent phenomena (because of the particular shape of the island) nicknamed "the cloud waterfall",which is caused by La Palma's rather extreme shape.

I think you will enjoy it. I have been fortunate enough to have witnessed in person when I went to hike the Cumbre Vieja volcano, and can assure you it's out of this world levels of incredible.
