My area recently got cable broadband so if I were still on copper broadband it would take me a good few days to download it.

Anyone who has slow BB has nothing but my sympathy.
When I finally get internet (currently camping for the next 4-6 months without) I'm looking at a max speed of 16mbs. It's the absolute back end of the boondocks and I'll be lucky to even get that much😂

At the current download rate, I won't be finished downloading until perhaps day after tomorrow, earliest at perhaps midnight tomorrow...assuming the gods of t'interweb and electricity are kind and don't throw a sulk...it happens regularly on this small island.

How fast is your connection if you don't e me asking?

16Mbps down and 8Mbps up...we have no hardline telephony services on the island since we have no subsea cable. We use TVWS broadband (TV White Space). Previously... as in a bare few years ago, we only had mobile phones and satellite broadband which was completely useless due to the latency....and very expensive.

TVWS brought new life for us here, it's not superfast but it's cheap (in line with similar bandwidth landline broadband package prices), it's also stable and very low latency...I average 20ms ping to London based servers. Due to our geographical location and government guidelines on minimum acceptable broadband speeds and access...it was also installed free for everyone on the island that wanted it. There's only 400 permanent residents on the island so it hardly stretched any government budget :D

I have a receiver the size of a truck door mirror on my byre pointed line of sight toward the main transmitter on the island...it requires no external phone line. Internally it's a standard cable type router...in my case, a 12 year old Cisco router that my son had lying around from when he was on the mainland...but it's still a league better than the basic cheap as chips TP-Link router that came free with the service :)

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Considering the imminent release, perhaps it would be great to list all(former) Elite CMDRs' in game name in the OP so that we can friend each other? I really loved in Elite to see all explorers on the Galmap, spread out in the galaxy...

I tried to register on the official FS forums, but I could not link my MS account to Xbox... I hope this will not be an issue to create an in-game profile.

Sure that's a great idea! If people want their in-game names added to my OP then please message me and I'll put 'em in.

I am now almost finished, 88Gb completed. I also took a rest, it is still early morning here. :)

Edit: Finished, but setting up this beast is another major task. Just changing the the rolling cache path 'takes several minutes' and uses about 70% GPU power... wow. Diversity in pilot selection is next level with only Asian and African avatars available. :)

Setting the region on my PC and the MS account to New Zealand allowed me to start the download yesterday evening and when I checked this morning it was all ready to go. I got the 1€ game pass standard version from the the MS store, as I doubt it'll hold my interest more than a couple of hours, tbh. Without guns, bombs and missiles I found that I got bored pretty quickly with the previous installments of the franchise that I tried. Still, it's looking very pretty indeed, so who knows, maybe this one will keep me interested a bit longer.

Finally got it to work after a good few alt-f4 and relaunch. First got stuck after MS authentication, then multiple times at the unmoving 30% full blue bar. Good thing google is a thing as I'd have waited on that unmoving blue bar for a while otherwise, but no, just needed to kill it/relaunch it a few times for it to decide to proceed onwards. And now that it's downloading, if I minimise the window, the GPU use jumps up from ~11% to 70%. Good thing this is only a one-time thing...

This installer is also going to put Valve in an interesting pickle. With only the 1GB installer delivered by Steam, and the rest being downloaded from MS by the game while it's "being played", it's going to push pretty much everyone over the 2h refund limit before they even get to launch the game proper.

Steam is working here now, starting the download... Unfortunately I'll have to start work in 1 hour and 20 minutes...
