Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

To give you a better idea of what a patchwork quilt based on the Orkney islands looks like...maybe there's some magic settings option to get rid of it. I've cached the whole of the islands so it's not that. But...the infernal flashing as the tiles draw in in varying shades as you fly along is pretty horrendous. If anyone is a bit wiser as to what's happening there, please...do tell before I bin the thing.

Ok, that's pretty shocking. 😂

But at that point, it has to be a bug somewhere, you can clearly distinguish the checkerboard pattern.

I wonder how Limmy took the shoddy Scotland autogen. Howls of rage, I expect?

My ancestral homeland of New Jersey isn't much better, but boy NYC looks great after you preload all the data. And still crawls.

No idea, but in a bit I'll fly over Sanday, Orkney and see how it looks in my sim just to verify if its a settings thing.

Oh, and I just turned on plane identifiers to see other planes called out in the sky and HOLY SMOKES there are people flying all over the Philadelphia area! This live player world thing is pretty sweet! I need to explore this multiplayer aspect more later today...

So I am both amazed and disappointed. My amazement is way higher than my disappointment however, because compared to any previous FS I've used, this is freaking amazing. We all know why it is amazing, so I'll focus mostly on my disappointments.

Perhaps I should say disappointment (singular), since it's all about the autogen algorithm and satellite imaging. This game does an amazing job at placing buildings where they belong, but these buildings often do not match what should be there. For example, there are apartments where a shopping mall should be, and buildings in general are of the wrong type and architecture and even color, which kinda ruins the "I'm flying over my home town!" feel of the simulator. Now ironically it nailed my own home surprisingly well, but then it put this huge industrial complex in the woods down the road from me where no such complex exists. Maybe they know something I don't?

And then there's the swapping of dirt roads for paved road, and paved roads for dirt roads... So my town is full of dirt roads, but the back dirt roads are busy highways? Huh. And everything is way too green - including the roads. I think I know why things are too green. Apparently the satellite imagery was taking in early spring when everything is still dead, so they must have false colored everything to make it look green. This kinda works, except for the SNOW still in the fields and woods! We've had the hottest summer on record, and I can promise you there is no snow, anywhere... Oh, and my airport is pretty crappy, too.

I look forward to scenery editing tools, because I can fix a lot of these problems myself. I also expect things to only get better over time, so I'm not salty about this, just a wee bit disappointed. All in all, however, this is an AMAZING flight simulator and I think I'll be enjoying myself greatly for a long time to come!

Got it mostly running now. Setting up the cache made a difference (thanks for that info!).

It's still having some stuttering issues, but not as bad.

I took off from Portland airport and flew toward Mt. Saint Helens (the volcano). I know the area a little bit. I didn't look for specific buildings, but it sure did look like Oregon.

The ATC guy kept bugging me but I ignored him and he went away.

I mean, you can't see anything if you don't fly low. Y'know? :p

Tried a bit further down the country round about Kinross...no tiling there. I guess Microsoft just forgot all about Orkney when they did the map...Back to the old 'Here be dragons' it is then. Not mightily impressed :cautious:

I maxed everything out...just in case it was that, tried messing around with anti-aliasing, texture mapping...the lot. Orkney is just simply the MSFS equivalent of a badly drawn boy...

Still need to get TrackIR working ..........

I was very pleased that TrackIR worked straight away, no need to alter anything - F9 to pause it and F12 to centre it seems not to conflict with anything else. It certainly made up for the SAGA that is binding camera controls for POV in the cockpit.

BTW - Anyone know how to set the game to run as Admin permanently? Remembering to do this otherwise the bindings cannot be changed (F D you are forgiven) is a bit of a pain.

So, apparently the SDK is actually available... just hidden. If you want to try it out, you need to enable 'Developer mode' and then this menu pops up...

Cool! Has anyone actually installed it yet? I'd love to see some screenshots of the terrain / building editors.

I have a Tobii 4c...works fine with the FaceTracknoIR emulator. No issues at all.

I've installed it. Consists of a Visual Studio 2019 plugin (some project templates), and a 3DS Max plugin. And no documentation. Also a project and virtual file system explorer. Scenery / Terrain / Everything Else Editor is thus far greyed out.

I guess they were right when they said it wasn't ready for prime time.

Ahh, okay. Well I'll wait until people figure it out (and perhaps make their own tools) and release some detailed howto videos before I mess with it. I used freeware 3rd party stuff way back in the day when I made assets for FS2004, and it was great. There's plenty to explore and learn in the meantime to keep me busy.

If you're using Steam, then right click on the title and select 'Properties', then Local Files, then Browse Local Files. Right click on 'FlightSimulator.exe'. Compatbility tab, select 'Run this program as an administrator', and then Apply and OK.

Same here, although I keep fiddling with curves to try avoiding moving the head too much because the Tobii sometimes keeps loses track of my eyes... I wish Tobii would add native support, I've been bugging them on their social networks about it :D, they said "they've passed the feedback to the dev team". I'm pretty sure they'll want to add this game to their list sooner rather than later.

The tools are there, they're just greyed out. Not ready yet apparently.

Personally, I hope they add Blender import before they do, because not everyone can afford 3DS Max$$$. Great for devs with Microsoft money behind them - not so great for end users and pauper devs like me. :D

STILL DOWNLOADING.... Day two :p
I haven’t even started yet. :( I just got the “we’re sorry” notification that the 480 GB SSD I ordered on Friday has been cancelled due to being out of stock. Here’s hoping that the two 240 GB I just ordered won’t suffer the same fate... 🤞
