Be warned, this is a serious rant - That's right, Bran is getting on his high horse again and this time he's angry...


Over the last few weeks I have noticed a disturbing trend that is for some reason really getting my back up on these forums hence it is time for a rant about it. I am talking about the use of the word 'So' at the start of a sentence. It's not breaking any laws of grammar but it is completely overused by some posters to the point where I have decided not to post in these threads as I will not be on topic at all and just rant until banned about the terrible use of the word.

I know how irrational this is but there are people who hate the word damp and moist with no reason and for me it is the word 'So'. Unless used in a manner which sounds correct - Very rare.

I'd better stop here unless I start to get all foul mouthed over the matter and it is just not worth it but I do wonder if there are other people who feel the same or have similar 'trigger' words/phrases (I know some people hate the use of the word triggered in such a manner, sorry for it use here).

Right, over to you lot. Call me mad, call me a fool, I care not. All I ask is that you keep it clean and have fun!

I cant stand the "Git Gud" thing that has started or "Noob" just really any type of gamer slang. It really grinds my gears. The military in me wants to knife hand them in the internet throat.

Actually I though every reply would of started with 'that' word. There will of course be no rep for you now or in the near future as I am putting your name on a list... Which I will no doubt lose very soon :D

I don't know about the rest of the English-speaking world, but on this side of the Atlantic, calling someone a git is mildly (and occasionally affectionately) pejorative. So that one confused me for a little while. Definitely agree on gamer slang - "pwnd", for instance. Or - perhaps ironically - "leet" (in its various spellings).

I think that changes in language have accelerated in the last 20 years, partly as a result of technological innovation (leading to the "verbing" of service names - "I'll Facebook you later", "Kik me when you get here", and such), and partly as innovation and social changes have allowed subcultures to spread. For example, the widespread use of Essex slang around the UK, thanks to reality TV. I spent a few years living in London and overheard a lot of conversations between teenagers, but understood almost none of them!

What winds me up? No specific words, but poor pronunciation, excessive profanity, and English people talking like Hollywood's depiction of deprived inner-city black gang members.

I think it probably is. When starting a sentence with the word so it is usually an interjection. Used to express surprise or disbelief. It seems that a lot of people are now using it as a conjunction but at the start of the sentence. That makes no sense.

ETA: There seem to be an increasing number of people using 'then' instead of 'than' as well. That's really annoying.

ETA (again): ...and 'prize' instead of 'price'. Grrr.

(and again): 'Life' instead of 'live'.

I break all sorts of grammar rules with the way I replace some words with 'yer' and 'ye'...some really dont like it and ask why...I just shrug and think why not I just type with an accent.

In saying that there is one word that really does me head in...when people type fraction instead of faction. The whole novel could be crystal clear grammar peelers dream, and this one word thats supposed to be a faction suddenly appears as fraction.

Makes me cringe inwardly cos its just wrong on so many levels.

You keep that accent sir, it is what makes you, you and is a joy to read. Anyone says different tell them to report to my office. Then ask them to let me know where my office is please. :D

"Defiantly" instead of "definitely", and confusing "all together" with "altogether", are two that seem to be on the rise lately. And that really wind me up.

(Also badly-written vacancy advertisements. Why should I come and work for you if you can't even be bothered to check that your job description and person specification have correct spellings, punctuation, and grammar?)

Actually: It is not used much here, or in written words; but is often said.. When you point out to some one is wrong and they come back with the: Actually.......

Your posts never worry me (well some do but not because of the grammar ;)), but then I'm from Somerset so it just reads the same as I would say it anyway.

In a similar vein to Bran, there is a certain word or phrasing with which someone starts off a rebuttal that sometimes gets my goat.

"Umm..."

When used in a humorous situation it's often fine but most of the time it just makes the person using it sound like a neckbeard lacking in social skills and trying to be clever.

I worry meself sometimes...my shrink needed a shrink after seeing me once...and I got a court order saying I wasnt allowed within 10 miles of them ever again...some people just have no sense of humour ^

I was at a rave in the late 90s in somerset once...no idea where it was just a field and a barn somewhere in the but end of nowhere but I know it was somerset...somewhere ^

I can feel a competition emerging out of this... Make the most 'ARGH' inducing statement with the words mentioned in this thread... With Christmas fast approaching and the fun I am planning this could be the icing on the cake!
