miner problem

These are long shots, but here are two possible guesses from me:

1. Are you in the right ring? Many planets have A, B or even C rings. These are stepping outwards from the planet and show different brightnesses. Metallic rings are dimmer and can be quite narrow.

2. Have you accidentally got the things you want to collect in your Ignore list? Try looking in Contacts to see if there are good fragments greyed out.

It may not show if you have not scanned the system.

Yes. You need to have scanned the system/planet one way or another. Surface probes are not essential but hotspots won't show up if you have no surface scanner fitted, even if you've scanned the ring for hotspots before.

Best way to get into mining I reckon is not be over picky about only finding one thing, painite, at first. Grab what you can, learn to use to the systems, then work out how to max yields later. Much more fun that way imo, a craftsman getting to know his tools, so to speak.

ps. Mining .. ROCKS!

so anyways, im born again hard, 13 tons of low temp in 3 hours, with a viper mark 4 and no collector limpets, I know im weak and new but starting out. found a pristine ring icy hotness, used most of my prospectors, but to be honest found almost all the rocks by simply firing at them as I approached them, theres no distinguishing features at all which identify a rock with diamonds, but one I noticed, im pretty sure every rock I found with diamonds was a bit further away when I could start shooting it with my lasers, in range that is, rocks that were duds I had to get closer before they came into range, so got almost 7 million for those stones. thanks all for the advice. btw the pulse scanner never identified an ore bearing rock at all, a trickster in sheeps clothing for sure.

the surface scanner is the one where you switch views while in super cruise and fire a probe at the rings right? odd as the place I went, hip 93377 6A did not identify as a hotspot anywhere on the ring when I scanned it, odd.

Correct.

And that can happen. I'd say most rings have a hotspot of some kind but some have none.

I agree, I thought running missions was the crux of the game but then did some mining and that's what I really want to get into.
There is no crux of the game just activities you enjoy doing and those you don’t.

Find the activities you enjoy and spend more time doing them than the ones you don’t. Personally I mine on occasions for relaxation or extra cash and only do missions to gain rank and access.

Just don’t force the activities you enjoy into a grind, after all this is a game without an end so no matter how hard you push you can’t finish first.

so the pulse wave does not help in finding surface deposits? had a feeling that was the case.

You said you were interested in laser-mining.
Now you're talking about surface deposits.

Pick a lane.

For laser-mining, you need mining lasers, cargo racks, limpets, collector controllers and (ideally) a prospector controller.
Nothing else.

Got to a hotspot.
Aim at roid.
Launch prospector.
Confirm content of roid.
If the roid contains what you're looking for, shoot it. A lot.
Launch collectors.
Profit.

It would be interesting (to me) to see the effect on the game of rings being "mined-out" and not replenished in the same way petroleum and coal deposits get mined-out and not replenished here on Earth. Players being forced to prospect further and further from home in an endless search for resources, driven by greed and profits.

Problem with that is, the galaxy is soo soo big, we wouldn't see any meaningful effect in our lifetime.

Actually there's some news on this, dropped December 20 ..

In addition to this, the more motherlodes (containing Void Opals) that Commanders encounter and mine from (in a ring), the rarer they will become, driving an emergent and natural rush that will force intrepid miners into new horizons, seeking lucrative mining hotspots before they deplete.

One more thing, since you are a 'new' player. Double painite mining works if you already have money to buy a big ship and all the needed equipment. I would not advice to go that route to a new player. The easiest way to get money as a new player in mining is deep core mining, you can use a Cobra for that and make money.

Shoot me a PM if you want to wing up in game. You'll be on your way in no time.
You can do Painite mining in a Sidewinder for your first trip, then in a T6 next trip, then in a T7 the next, and then in a T9 for the next. That means within a few hours of start, you will have a ship capable of mining at well over 200 mil per hour consistently. That route painite mining would be much more lucrative than core mining. Even if you stick with a T7, you can make over 150 mil per hour, which is comparable with core mining, but much more predictable and reliable.
