Mining - any logic to the amount of pirates encountered?

Hi all, decided to give mining a go in my Anaconda yesterday. So far I have a net loss of around 20 million credits ;)

Did two sessions, both at the same Resource Extraction Site. This was labelled as "High". Which, as it turns out, means "High Intensity", and not "High Security" - Seriously FDev, make it possible to figure out these things in game without having to use google!

Regardless:

First session, pottering around finding something worthwhile to mine and after a few minutes I start getting pretty much constant scans and attacks. Not really a big deal as I'm in an Anaconda and nothing gets through my shields for the first 10-12 attackers. Then a "Deadly" Anaconda decides to go mental at me (for 3 tonnes of platinum), actually takes down my shields and knocks my hull down to 65% before I can finish him off.

I should of course have left at this point, but greed took over ;) A few more small ships later and suddenly my scanner lights up in red, 5 or 6 ships all attacking at the same time. No idea what they where but my shields were gone in seconds, then my drives died, and then I exploded as I was trying to get out of mass lock.

Seconds session, same Res, not a single scan or other ship in about an hour. What did I do wrong first time? Should I have moved away from the area you drop in at?

Edit: I was playing in Mobius, and the attackers were all NPC's

What you did wrong was drop into an area meant for bounty hunting, not an area meant for mining (which isn't your fault at all ;p thank FD for their great labeling system), go back to supercruise and drop anywhere else in the ring but the HiREZ.

You get a bonus for mining in a low/hi/haz extraction site, but you don't because you constantly have to fight so really they are for bounty hunting or wing activity only.

Oh, and yeah, make sure you hit the right ring if you're manually dropping in to avoid disappointment.
System map will point you to where the good stuff is depending if there is a choice and what you're looking for.
Pristine Metallic rings generally seem to be closer to the planet but I only do local systems and am no expert.
Have fun though.

I first thought that those areas indicated part of the belt where security forces were present
now it would make sense for pirates to fly around the rest of the belt as well then but no
then there is the resource site that does not have any police which is what the rest of the
belt should be like, it breaks that idea. So basically the resource sites are like conflict zones
where you go to shoot stuff with mining npc's there.

The whole way it is implemented is messed up and does not make sense.
It is just a crapshoot

That is exactly it. It's for combat.
there is 99.9999999% of the ring left for mining and you will rarely see a pirate so you can Blast rock to your hearts content

You do get slightly better fragment yield (10 - 15%) at the RES location but you'll need a well armed miner to hold onto it but you'll be able to collect bounties as well :), outside of a RES you need to ease down into the rings or the ship will do an emergency drop out and cause some damage, it's also pretty a cool visual as you approach the rings too.

Yeah it would've been better off these places were for mining instead of npc farming, which should be what conflict zones are for.

But they're not, so you gotta make do with less profits and more risk than trading if you want to be a miner that goes to res

No, no, no.

If you ease down into a ring you won't take any damage. You need to slow down to speeds that would also allow a manual drop without damage.

They are very much for mining. A resource extraction site has Bioreducing Lichen deployed, which significantly increase the yield (fragments per rock). So finding a high percent of valuable material is worth a lot more. Obviously the higher yielding areas draw in more attention from miners and thus also pirates. Fortunately there is generally security (and sometimes bounty hunters) around and pirates are generous enough to announce their presence via scan and communication. If you aren't fit for combat you better run to security as soon as a pirate takes a closer look at you (that is before they open fire). If you are fit for combat you best instantly check if that pirate is alone or in a wing. Don't take on wings alone, at least not when they already have their guns pointed at you. Beyond that you should be happy about the additional bounty vouchers.

This game, honestly... every time I try something new it is horribly counter intuitive. Want to extract some resources? Do it anywhere you want, except for the resource extraction sites, because there you will be attacked non-stop by NPC's ;)

I can't seem to stop playing, despite the state of things, but I really hope FDev have hired someone that actually has some user interface knowledge to clean things up for 2.1. I'm all for games being difficult - but trial and error isn't difficult, it is just frustrating. There needs to be ways of figuring stuff out without resorting to the forum or google.

Wrong as you figured out on your second attempt.

Does it not make sense that an area can be more or less frequented by ships? Just pay more attention to your surroundings and don't get yourself killed for being greedy.

Also try different intensities or systems.

While I'll admit to using the forum/google too, FD have said that the game isn't meant to be hand-holding and that you need to work things out for yourself. And it appears you have: so you see, it's all working as intended! ;-)

I was being intentionally overdramatic there - but the point is if you try to use logic to succeed in ED, you will be incredibly frustrated. Use Google on the other hand, and it will treat you well :)

I hope they don't mean that the only alternative to "hand holding" is having the game be intentionally misleading. That would be a shame ;)

And yes, 20 million credits was a rather rough lesson, but hey, figured it out now thanks to the forum! Back to extract some resources, far away from a resource extraction site...

That's always true if you don't adjust your initial assumption upon discovering that it was wrong (in this case mistaking high for just security rather than also dragging along mining yield/intensity and pirates - which does make a lot of sense logically) and need what you already discovered yourself reiterated by others.

No problem :D

They set traps, your first experience going to that Gold heaven strong signal source should be the only lesson you need.
I dunno why everyone cries when things are stupidly easy in this game most of the time.
But when it throws a curveball it's like....Welp! Can't adapt and pooped myself.
They do it in missions as well and players still don't get it.
And everyone wonders why there is no challenge in gaming...it's because you current breed of human's can't handle it.

Your stones are growing though, you may just be able to survive.
That's a good thing.

This game has a strange fanbase sometimes. If it isn't immediately obvious to you that this experience is a result of some pretty rubbish game design, then I am not sure what can be done to make it clear. Imagine this from the perspective of a new player, who just started, and doesn't use the forums:

His first mining experience, assuming he could even find a metallic ring to mine without Googling it first, would entail dropping in to a resource extraction site, starting to mine, and being immediately blown out of the sky. Through no fault of his own, as there are no in game clues to what you are about to face other than (High) at the end of the name.

For me this was only a minor inconvenience as I have played for ages and have plenty of credits. For this poor newbie it could mean a complete reset at worst, or at best weeks of grinding assuming he hasn't found out about the Robigo missions through the forums...

Just as there is a difference between a boxing match and being sucker punched down the pub, there is a difference between a game being challenging and just plain misleading. If you believe there is some in-game clue to the nature of mining that I have missed, please enlighten me. Assuming there isn't, I'd appreciate less comments on the size of my nads in the future ;)

Grinders need to Grind.

At least being in a res site is marginally more interesting than shooting the same ships in a CZ.
