Newcomer / Intro Mining Equipment

Thinner and deeper target zones almost certainly produce more chunks on average since the Fleet Carriers update (not higher ore percentage right enough, but more chunks).
Thinner bars produce more fragments. However, depth does not influence this in any appreciable way other than through the fact that wider zones tend to appear near the surface. When I collected actual data on this (splitting the depth into three equally sized depth bins), there was no statistically significant difference between the yield of the two-bar zones in the first, second, or third bin. This data was collected over several hundreds of SSDMs. Unless you are aware of a more detailed study with more data claiming otherwise, I would say that the dependence on depth is a myth as any variation with depth is explainable by wider (and therefore poorer) zones being produced mainly at shallow depths. (I.e., a two-wide zone in the first third does not statistically give an appreciably different result from a two-wide zone in the last third)

Yeah, I was casually referring to the fact that the thinner ones tend to be deeper, sorry.

I am trying to get all the mods that I need for mining for my carrier so I can mine SSD Laser and Deep Core.
I have never done deep core or SSD or used an abrasion blaster.

I know I will need :
1 x pulse wave analyser
1 x seismic charge launcher
1 x abrasion blaster
2 x sub surface displacement missile

But what sizes? I am at a station with my annie to get all of them but cant work out what I will need. I intend to modify my mining python each time I want to equip for deep core/laser/ssd. But is there an optimal fit out for my python? Can I fit it so it will do all three any time I want?

Oi. I have a fairly good all around Python mining build.

Feel free to take it and change it around or whatever. But it covers all the bases, and I like it.

Why do you have turreted mining lasers? What is the benefit over fixed?

edit: I now notice all yur hardpoint equip, ent is turreted. The advice I got on here was to go with fixed unless you will be using multicrew?

Turreted mining tools can be used by multicrew, but turrets have to be set to Forward Fire for them to be used by you. If you use fixed mount tools then the orders for turrets can be left set to Target Only where they should be for weapons.

Ye. I have friends that like the game... But are really, really terrible at it... So I Multicrew with them when they wanna play. Not quite the same, but it works.

I really like my Python for mining. As others have said, I also never worry about having just one charge launcher or abrasion blaster. I have never run out of ammo when filling my hold (and refinery slots) with goodies.

The Python is nothing if not the multi-purpose ship that it is advertised to be - it's great! It's easy to make it mine whatever you want without returning to reconfig. As others, I also use it for surface deposits and deep-core mining. In addition, I'm not a fan of losing my haul, nor of running as a necessity (rather as a choice), so my build is one that can also defend itself and attack if need be or if I decide that's what I want to do. That's what I call functional and fun. (Opinions, of course).

There's room to play with this config. For example:
In the hardpoints, I have two weapons & three mining tools. Like I said, I like my goodies to remain mine.
In the optional slots I have included a SRV hangar so this is also my planetary-surface miner (and amateur explorer but 🤫 don't tell anyone).
In the utility slots I have noticed on other CMDR's rigs that they have included a heatsink launcher. While I don't disagree that this is a good thing, I have simply found no need for it.

The beauty of the Python is that it has the versatility to be what you want it to be. That's not to say that other ships don't but there is something about the Python in that respect. Many others agree; it's not the most popular ship for no reason.

My build looks like this:

Enjoy!
Hmm... maybe I'll swap the shileds for prismatics (combat-miner!)
