Mining in 1.4 - thank you devs!

I think I'd like to give mining a shot, but have never done it before.

Can anyone please recommend an Anaconda load out that is self sufficient? The only thing I can't afford is an A rated class 8 power plant, and am using a Class C just to keep my jump range up from the massive B power plant.

Do I just load up on Collector drones? Do I get the biggest refinery bin? Cheers for any suggestions!

Edit: Ok I've done some more reading, how does this look?

Oh so wonderful...my Imperial Mining Clipper is back in business.

Just need to make a few more adjustments such as get a second mining laser and another limpet controller...four limpets seems a decent trade off between cargo and speed.

Can't quite let go of the B7 shields and boosters b/c I get paranoid on my way to station.

actually i will even go with 7, I had 5 yesterday and it looks quite funny, but still takes the drones some time after depleting an asteroid

Did a nice hour and 10 mins of mining in my T7. Can't recall all the ores I got, but a full 132 tonne hold. It would have probably gone for 2 -2.5mil but since I got interdicted and even keeping the target on target my blue line was getting smaller and smaller, time to submit.. I submit and get an interdiction failure then blasted to bits within 10 seconds.. :( sad times.

Am i missing something / doing something wrong.... In a system with a 'Metallic' ring (Ring A of an A/B) ... heading into a quiet spot (away from the HazRes) that also occupies.... Found plenty of plat/palla/gold/silv but ZERO painite...
So just checking:
1. 'Metalic' is pristine?
2. Is there a particular 'spot' within the different shades of the ring section to head towards for better results?

I used to get painite in 1.3 but haven't had a single fragment in 1.4 which seems to fly against what you all are saying

I am a bit of a mining newb but do have a nicely kitted out python for the task

Painite is still quite randomly rare in the asteroids. That amd eme mad, found a 40% Painite potatoe and after two fragements were collected the mining bug crasht the response to the server :/ all those fragments floating uncollected in space, and the loss of 5 drones.

Pristine is the quality of the rings. Depleted - low - common - major - pristine.
Metallic is the type of ring. Icy - Rocky - Metal Rich - Metallic.

This info should be in the system maps of the systems you are looking in - click on the planet in question, and check out the left hand info panel, you may need to scroll down.

EDIT:

Make sure you are in the correct ring too. Many planets have 2 or 3 rings. A ring is closest to the planet, B the next one out and C being farthest away. If they are different type of ring, they will be different colours.

EDIT EDIT:

As said Painite is the rarest of them all, at the moment. You are relying on Random Number Generation(RNG) to create what's in each asteroid, every time you prospect/mine a new one. Once prospected it is locked at that for you.

1. no - pristine are rings with very high % per asteroid (I don't think that's a visible status anywhere? I've been looking for it but never seen it ...); so you can get an asteroid with 50% platinum instead of the usual 3~15%.
2. I like to land in the bright/less transparent parts just because the asteroids are more dense there (less flying) - don't think it has any other impact

And I think you've just been unlucky not finding Painite or the composition of your location changed with the update.

The quality indicator is found in System Map. Click on the planet and look at the left hand info panel, scroll down till you see the ring information. Just about that there should be " XXXXXXX reserves". You don't get to see what % are there as this is only decided when you prospect or mine any given asteroid.

Different coloured parts of rings denote A,B or C rings assuming the rings are of different types. Difference of colour within a ring.. I think it's cosmetic.

Sad thing is most pristine in the bubble are federal, and none at Aisling. a few only in the empire. :/ Guess I have to leave the shield selling girly until I am rich.

Hi, first time posting on the forum :)

For those that find it tedious to hold the fire button when mining and own the HOTAS rhinos 55, ive mapped secondary fire button on a rotary on the trottle, and it keeps firing it works very well :)

Welcome to the forum :) nice and helpful first post too! I use a X52, and realised that I could stick my mobile in between the trigger and the trigger guard.. :D

If you can get a ship (Asp, FDS, Clipper, Python etc.) that will use two class 2 medium mining lasers you will deplete a prospected rock in seconds.

Thanks!

I am very certain the ring colour matches with asteroid density. Just fly close over the ring at 30 km/s and drop into different intensities and you will notice.

Really? Tell me which. All the ones I know are just outside the power play bubble inside empire space.

Unless you also have a large number of active collector drones as well, many of those fragments will disappear before you get to them. It's all about getting the balance right, which is very ship/loadout dependant. I've found that 2 class ones balance well with having five or six drones picking things up. My power Dist keeps up with the lasers, and occasionally it needs a couple of seconds recharge.

Yeah right now I am in a T7 it was painfull after 3 rocks :p but tried in my ASP its was still kind of long lol

EDIT : and even in my asp, with full pips to weapons it had to recharge every 25% of rock depletion. How is it in a python ?

Wow, I really was mining all wrong. When outfitting I didn't really have a clue, but seemed to get everything I needed. But only one mining laser, one collector controller, and I still don't know what exactly prospectors do.

I found that I could just keep up with two collectors constantly filling the hopper, so didn't need additional collector controllers (or mining lasers) - I didn't even know you could have multiple collector controllers. I only had a 4 bin refinery two which slowed things down. In about 3 or 4 hours of mining, I ended up with about 400K.

I assume if the ore automatically goes into the refinery bins, you just end up having to dump lots of unwanted cargo later on?

Yes, but you can vent before that happens and also prevent that from happening by always running with a full cargo hold (limpets for padding).

edit:
and prospectors tell you the composition of and asteroid, remaining material and issue a voice message once depleted
+ since 1.4 they also roughly triple the fragment yield
