Newcomer / Intro Mining: seismic charges question

o7 CMDRs

I am new to the game, maybe 300 hrs or so. In the meantime I have come across a lot of the various aspects of it and I must admit I love it so far.

I was able to pick up a Krait MkII recently and fit it out for deep core asteroid mining. I did this already with my Asp Exp but it was mostly for learning the different techniques available rather than for earning money. Now with the Krait I wanted to shovel some money to live calm and in peace for some time without the daily hassle and worry about my bank account.

Of course there is a question coming now, it's about the stacking of seismic charges and disabling them on core asteroids.
During my last mining tour I overcooked some asteroids - still leaning about the right amount of charges of course. On one of the occasions where I disarmed charges because I was already in the red zone I failed to disarm all of them in time and the resulting small explosion failed to crack the asteroid. When I went back to it to try again I realized that the former fissures where I placed charges did not exist anymore - OK, sort of realistic. Therefore I went placing a new charge on one of the remaining High Strength fissures. But despite I did not place a high charge there the intensity of the explosive would immediately go into the red band. So I disarmed the charge and tried again on another High Strength fissure - again the same result, immediately into the red, despite the placed load was even smaller. I wonder why?

Is this because the previous explosion has weakened the asteroid and all remaining fissures are Low Strength now? Do disarmed charges still count to the load, i.e. they explode with the others? I did not read anything about that so far.

Thanks a lot for any clarification from the more experienced commanders.

You do not have to disable all of the charges
I usually disable one low end charge, or a med and replace it with a low
You can place charges in old fissures, they will still work, its just tough to see them
You can place any strength charge you like, low on a med fissure, high on a low fissure they all work

Yes, the asteroid accumulates the damage. Easy way to crack asteroids - Search through the contacts for 2 Low strength fissures, put max charge on both, that will get you optimal most days. If not find a High after and put a smidge in it. If you overcook, disarm the last charge and try again with either more or less. Also works with Low+Avg or 2 Avg, you just have to adjust the 3rd charge a bit more.

Thanks a lot for your replies, gentlemen.

That's good to know; I will try that next time.

I thought the number of fissures you crack make a difference, i.e. more fissures more fragments? Most of the time I set three to four charges; I set a high one on a high strength fissure and then make my way forward with low and average strength fissures. This evening I was quite successful, not one boiled asteroid so far. Mission accomplished, it seems.

No you just require enough charges to get the display into the blue region, the faster you can place them and the fewer charges used gives more time for adjustments and reaching the minimum safe distance.

🍀 I usually fire the first charge completely energized to red, smoking hot (for consistency since one limpet is never enough) and then try to adjust the second charge to gain optimum yield. If I am still below optimum yield I will fire a third limpet with an absolutely minimum yield. This usually results in an optimum yield.
If, on the second or third shot I "overcook" and exceed optimum yield I disable only the last charge set. This is fairly quick and since I usually remember the set yield on the last limpet fired, I can almost always get the yield right on for the next limpet. o7

Thank you CMDRs,

Yes, it becomes routine after some handful of cracked asteroids. Sort of a pity that there is not more intelligence to be applied than getting into the blue band ... anyway, thank you very much for taking your time to answer :)

o7 and safe skies to all
