Mining Since the Update

Fellow Pilots,

I have been doing a lot of Combat/Mining (Enter Resource Site, Hunt bad guys until I have built up a large wing of System Patrol Craft, Mine rocks with air cover) since the update, and I have noticed some awesome things:
1) It seems like each asteroid is dropping 2 - 3 times the fragments that they did before the patch. has anyone else noticed this, or is it my imagination?

2) The new autoloading routine makes mining a lot more relaxing, and efficient. (When it works...) On the minus side, it also seems to lock into an endless loop periodically. (Already made a Bug Report) The only work-around I have found is to either 'Save & Exit' or Exit the Resource Site and re-enter. This is a serious pain when You are mining a rock that has 25% + Painite... :`( Has anyone found a better way to get out of that refinery loop?

3) The fact that You get an alert whenever a material is successfully refined, and added to your hold is wonderful!

How has mining been treating You since the update?

I have noticed the increase in asteriod chunks myself.

Only problem i have had is they if i have 2 collector limpets out, they will take turns dropping chunks if there are more than 1 chunk available. Kinda defeats the purpose of have 2 collector out.

I haven't tried mining because I don't want to outfit my Python for it anymore. I do want to buy another ship specifically for mining though. Glad and sad to hear there is improvement and bugs

@telnettech: Hmm... I haven't noticed that problem with my Collectors; of course I hadn't been paying that close attention either. I'll have to check that out tonight. Thanks!

@joshuma32: I can't imagine mining in a Python myself, but I've seen it done. The Asp makes a comfortable Combat/Miner or Civilian/Miner for relatively cheap. Plenty of cargo space, and enough weapon slots to have mining lasers and weapons.

@Jason Trask:
1) As with any mining, You want to hunt in Pristine/Metallic rings for the highest quality in Mined Minerals. (It also seems like there are tougher/more lucrative bounties in these...)
2) Try to find a hunting ground near one or more High Tech/Refinery worlds, as they will often have Mining Missions available. (Selling 2 Platinum for 30k is great, turning in the same 2 platinum for 150k is better!)
2a) Always fly to every station in the High Tech/Refinery system to look for Mining Missions BEFORE You sell off your cargo. (I made 400,000 off of mining missions alone on a single run this morning with one stop at each station)
3) If You're ship is tough enough, High-Res sites give the best bounties and toughest opponents. If alone I recommend staying in Medium to Low Res to avoid being overwhelmed.
4) Prospector and Collector Limpets are your Friends. They make Mining Easy. Fill your hold to max with Limpets before You head out - You WILL use them all.
5) Spring for a Refinery with at least 6 bays. (An Class 2A, or larger). This lets You keep a bay for Painite, Platinum, Palladium, Gold, Osmium, and Silver; each. Anything of less value than these are more or less beneath your notice...
6) If the asteroid doesn't have 25% or more of one of the six materials above (Or ANY amount of Painite... Painite is worth the extra effort) it's not worth mining.
7) Make sure that your Ship is Combat-Ready. At least a Reinforced Hull, Class A or B Shields, a mix of thermal and kinetic Weapons, and I recommend a Shield Bank as well as a Chaff Launcher for when it's time to run.
8) Bring a Kill Warrant Scanner - It will really amplify the bounty value.
9) If You find that your cargo bay is full, but You still have limpets: Turn off your Collector limper controller in the systems tab for a moment to self-destruct the active ones, or just fire another prospector.

...That is the wisdom I have collected between reading the forums, and getting practical experience.
You may also find this post by IProgenyI interesting, it was pure gold (or is that Painite?!) for me:

As to Winging up: I'd Love to. Right now I can't seem to stay in a wing with anyone for longer than 10 minutes because of Server issues in open play. Once that's cleared up I'm in. Bigger Wings mean better profits in High Res zones IMHO. :)

Kaze Out.

What's your recommendation on a mining/bounty hunting ship within a 6 million credit range? (Just base price for the ship.)

I had a asp before my python. Both make good mining ships. I really don't want an asp again. I'll be looking for something with more cargo.

Mining in the Python was a fun experience but I'm really tired of changing out internals every time I get bored of what I'm doing. I need to make a ship for all tasks. I'm really close to that already

I get an issue where it says the refinery has lost connection to the server, and gets stuck in this. I'm then unable to reallocate anything from the hopper. Is this the same glitch you're experiencing? 20150807_204923.jpg

Thats the one.
:(

That was there prepatch as well, what i do to "clear" the snag is select the mineral in question thats in the bin 2x fast, may need to do it a few times for it to clear. I've noticed it when i have for example 90% painite in the refinery with a 20% in the bin that 10% extra im assuming confuses the refinery (my guess atleast), the double tap method i described above works for me quickly. Lastly post patch I've noticed that collector limpets have a bug where they fight over fragments like a pair of half starved dogs on a steak, annoying as this doubles collection times.

How has mining been treating You since the update

I gave mining a good shot before the update with a fully equipped Hauler and as much as I was already enjoying the relaxed side of it, I couldn't picture myself doing it in a T9.
I gave mining a second shot these last few days with a bigger ship, collection limpets, smarter refinery… I think I'm in love again :)
Mining is just brilliant now, and knowing that it's going to get some more tweaks in the near future (1.4?) all the better.

I get an issue where it says the refinery has lost connection to the server, and gets stuck in this. I'm then unable to reallocate anything from the hopper. Is this the same glitch you're experiencing?

I noticed it to happen more when moving the ship and the limpets makes a rough delivery… I would think it's intended game mechanic.
Being stuck, though… dunno.

I am very satisfied with the Asp Explorer in that price range. It has plenty of weapon and equipment slots, reasonable maneuverability, and even when kitted for combat it has plenty of cargo room. The trick with making money from Combat/Mining is not sheer volume and base value of goods (like with trade); it's the ability to hit Mining and Collection Missions, while killing the crap out of the pirates who would prey on your fellow miners. This morning I had a quick hour to play, and didn't even finish using all of the 68 limpets I brought with me; I made 200k off of kills, 500k off of mining missions, and another 300k off of selling the remainder of the haul. About a Million-ish in an hour. :)

EDIT: To be fair, my Wife uses a cobra in the same role, and makes about the same. I gross more when I have time to completely fill my hold. ;)

kinda a shame you both play solo

I decided to buy a d back explorer as a stepping stone to the asp but now I cant mine as I cant afford the stuff I want Id protect you after you killed however many pirates you wanted while you filled your holds

Well... We can try it. (Still having server errors on Open) My GT is the same as my Forum name. Try shooting me a Friend request and We'll see if the game will let us wing up for more than 10 Min...

Might try something like this (This is just a quick draft): http://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback_explorer/14B4C5C3D4B3D5C0o272m0m00020346031sC0P4.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==?bn=DB%20Miner%20Jager

If you don't want to kit for fight, or just like the relaxing part of mining, you can drop in a ring anywhere. Just fly into it.
Just make sure you do it slowly so you don't get damage. And make sure you drop in the right ring ;)

There might be one or two pirates right after you dropped, but once they're gone you're good for as long as you like, there are no new ones coming.

I've recently mined out about 15m in ... I think 5 or 6 sessions. Mind you that was in a Python with 224 cargo - full with P-minerals, Osmium, and some Gold. I couldn't leave the gold. I left the silver though.
5 collectors, 1 prospector. Dream mining. And that's pure mining, I've made about 5-6m more on top from mining missions, but those don't count towards mining profits in stats - I think they go towards trading.

About the refinery getting stuck: sometimes when you have close to 100% refined of both minerals that are coming in, you have to tap (and double tap) one or the other until it clears out.
Server communication issues: had that too, many times, but I never had to leave, just wait a little and it fixed itself.

Ah, last tip - there are 9 types of minerals in a metallic ring, so with a 9 (or 10) slot refinery you can just take everything, and jettison later when you need the space. With that many collectors it's actually much faster than having to jerk your head to the right every time they bring in something so you can vent it.

I had no issues with multiple collectors. Apart from the fact that they die upon arrival when there's another player in your instance. It seems random, but pretty consistent to be really really annoying. So mining in wings is not too good at the moment for this reason.
