Mining Since the Update

If you don't want to kit for fight, or just like the relaxing part of mining, you can drop in a ring anywhere. Just fly into it.
Just make sure you do it slowly so you don't get damage. And make sure you drop in the right ring ;)

There might be one or two pirates right after you dropped, but once they're gone you're good for as long as you like, there are no new ones coming.

I've recently mined out about 15m in ... I think 5 or 6 sessions. Mind you that was in a Python with 224 cargo - full with P-minerals, Osmium, and some Gold. I couldn't leave the gold. I left the silver though.
5 collectors, 1 prospector. Dream mining. And that's pure mining, I've made about 5-6m more on top from mining missions, but those don't count towards mining profits in stats - I think they go towards trading.

About the refinery getting stuck: sometimes when you have close to 100% refined of both minerals that are coming in, you have to tap (and double tap) one or the other until it clears out.
Server communication issues: had that too, many times, but I never had to leave, just wait a little and it fixed itself.

Ah, last tip - there are 9 types of minerals in a metallic ring, so with a 9 (or 10) slot refinery you can just take everything, and jettison later when you need the space. With that many collectors it's actually much faster than having to jerk your head to the right every time they bring in something so you can vent it.

I had no issues with multiple collectors. Apart from the fact that they die upon arrival when there's another player in your instance. It seems random, but pretty consistent to be really really annoying. So mining in wings is not too good at the moment for this reason.

Hmm... I think I'm going to need a bigger boat... :D

It's good to hear from a Civillian Miner. I admit that You can make more money/run with a big civillian mining rig, and that pure mining is very relaxing. (Sometimes I do this while watching a movie, or enjoying my morning coffee) I just love the pew-pew a little too much to give up my combat capability. Besides, there is something very satisfying about replying to "Die Victim!!!" with a hail of gunfire... ;)

5 collectors, 1 prospector.

So you CAN run with more than two collectors? I hooked up two collector controllers on my T6 last night that could control 2 active limpets each. At first, I was only able to send out two limpets. After messing with the fire groups, I somehow had three out there, but could never repeat that scenario again. Next time I was in port, I yanked the second controller off.

Are you using multiple controllers, or just one very high class one that can control five active limpets?

The most limpets you can control with one unit is 3.

I'm kinda confused how the other guy was able to have so much cargo in his Python wile mining. Do you not run shields wile mining?

I had 2 controllers, A5 and A3 - they are able to control 3 and 2 limpets respectively, hence the 5 collectors. I've just put them in the same fire-group, so I would deploy 2 at a time twice, then the last one.
I did occasionally switch off one of the modules, so I can deploy only 1 drone - no issues at all, worked as expected. Not sure what's going on for you guys.

Since there are (were?) about 10-12 fragments per asteroid with class 2 mining lasers, 5 limpets are kind of ideal... as you need some time to handle the refinery. I might have to try with 6 once, to be completely optimal, but that means sacrificing some cargo space.

I had shield, A3 to be precise, and an A1 prospector in the size 2 slot, the rest is cargo - that adds up to 224.

I mine in my python- it has 2 A3 limpet controller's(4 limpets at a time total) and a 10 bin refinery. 2 medium mining lasers.
I can generally fill the hold (192 t) using about 36 limpets in around an hour give or take a bit.
I only go to pristine metallic's and try to find them close to somewhere with reasonable sale prices. I usually check for collection missions to maximize the profits.
At the moment I am mining at Narvert 3 and making between 1 and 1.5million a trip. I could probably get more than that if I ditched the lower value materials and had more limpets- but an hour of collecting is usually enough for me and I need to break it up a bit...

I've got to say it is pretty easy compared to the old way of manual scooping but not a bad balance in my opinion. Also if you are rubbish at scooping up cargo then the manual mining method will get you up to speed in no time.

Hmm, I may try mining yet. I'm still flogging this 3400c per tonne route I've got cooking in my Asp. This ship is setup a bit hybrid right now (running without shields is just asking for trouble I found) so I'm only carrying 108t per load but that still nets out to about 365k+ per round trip which takes about 10-11 minutes. But it's boring as sin though. I do a few million then take a break and go kill stuff, or fly back over to Li Yong-Rui territory and upgrade some equipment at 15% off. Switching gears entirely and doing some mining sounds like a good plan.

As with everything it can get monotonous I seem to rotate thru mining/killing/exploring on about one week cycles...

OK... a couple of new things:

1) @L0CI found a work-around that reduces the frequency of the problem through old-school Refinery management: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=173863&p=2667046#post2667046

2) There has been much talk about 'Combat Loggers', and I had a terrible thought: When a Miner logs out to defeat the above Refinery issue, and they are close enough to a rock to warrant the 15 second cooldown to logout, is said Miner setting Him/Herself up to be reported as a combat logger by some automated system? Just a stray thought... :S

Keep Mining and Refining,
Kaze

I thought you were telling me you'd found a workaround and ended up reading my own post :D

*lol* Sorry about that, I just wanted to make sure that You got due credit for the find. ;)

Also:
Checked out @telnettech's thoughts on the limpet controllers. I had up to 3 collectors running around, but sadly found that a single collector collected faster for me because of the limpets' tendency to fight over fragments. So I am doen to a single A1 Collector Controller until that bug gets fixed... :p

This thread has been very interesting to read, thanks!
I've got another question: is a Detailed Surface-Scanner necessary to determine the content of planetary-rings? As it is now, my advanced discovery-scanner only gives me the ammount of resources (pristine etc.) but not the kind of resources in the ring.

In short: Yes. Good question. :)

They aren't fighting only one limpet will carry at a time , when one has a fragment and the other grabs a different the first will drop its fragment but still come to my ship like it has something then goes after the fragment it dropped and when it grabs it the other limpet drops its fragment and comes to ship empty handed and so on and so on.... 2 limpets never have squares at 1 time since patch

Anyone hear when, Collector Limpet Bug, Refinery Lockup Bug and the Weapon Loadout mixing is going to get fixed or looked at ?
