Newcomer / Intro Mining this particular element is killing me

For the past four nights I have spent many hours looking for Painite. No luck with this one. Trying to unlock a Engineer. I have been to Frey, 58 Epsilon Herculis, and countless planets with metal rings. Anyone out there have any luck....please tell me where....

My personal favourite for mining "for profit" is Jura 7's pristine metallic ring. After an hour an a half, I'm usually leaving with my Cutter's belly full of 3Ps, of which at least 100T is Painite.

Always make sure it's metallic, not metal rich (no Painite in those).

If you are searching random ring locations it's about one in 30 asteroids for me. So you either need to bring lots of active prospectors and patience or check asteroids with the laser only (still tag with a 1A prospector before mining to get more fragments). Make sure you are prospecting fast so it takes minutes, not hours.

You'll find more in extraction sites, density increasing with intensity - they will also drop more fragments in there and you can even relocate and mine them again after two hours.

For me, and this may be nonsense, but, when I was looking for painite, I found that, for the same ring on different spawns, there would either be 'roids with it, or there would not.

So basically if I didn't find any within the first, say, four or five rocks tested, I wouldn't find any for the rest of that session.

I guess what I'm saying is: if you come across a field that doesn't offer up painite at all, re-log, or jump out and back in again.

Of course, it *might* just be really rare and I was really unlucky a few hours straight, but there was a marked difference when I fell into a field that had painite 'roids. It was still like 1/4 or 1/6 rocks or so rare, but it wasn't 1/50 rare.

I had to do the exact same unlock a couple of days ago, I used this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgWRodaL08k. Was a little skeptical, never sure how up to date these things are.... Anyways, make sure you have a prospector limpit controller! I flew around and shot asteroids with limpits, took about 30 limpits til I found one. The good news was I managed to get my 10 tons from that one rock, so overall maybe a 15 minute investment. Good luck!

HUH? Surely the higher rating just increases the range at which they can work and the time they remain active? I don't think higher rated ones make more chunks come out - or do they... ?
That was my understanding as well. The letter rating affects the range; the size the number of limpets.
I know that having a prospector increases the yield.

Has there been a change in a recent patch?

EDIT: The description at http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Limpet_Controller/Prospector does not indicate there has been a change but a comment from one of the users '1 day ago' says there is.

I unlocked the same engineer 2 weeks ago. Might have been luck but I got the pain-in-the --ite almost straight away. Using prospector limpets is excellent advice. It will also increase the yield of the roid. Also try and find the whitest part of the ring as this indicates the densist area. Make sure it is metallic not metal rich, and pristine. The metallic ring is virtually never the outer one and almost always is the inner one. The system with the pristine metallic ring that I mined is called Mesarthim. It is uninhabited and about 12Ly from the nearest inhabited one. Here's the link:
http://elitedangerous.hozbase.co.uk/pristinemetallicrings/distancefrom?system=mesarthim&distancely=500

In this case it is a single ring so the whole ring is pristine metallic. Although the image does not display the rating (pristine) of the ring, it is uninhabited and outside the bubble so it definitely is.

outside the bubble so it definitely is.

Ok...last night went out looking for Painite....had 30 Prospect Limpets and 20 Collector Limpets. Tried about 7 different rings at the locations suggested. Collected 1 ton of Painite, attacked 11 times for my one ton, and collected 383,000 in bounties. Rather had the Painite......lol

I usually mine in my annie with 200 limpets. Painite does pop up but infrequently. I was lucky when i did my unlocking because i got 12 from the first asteroid i tried. Ive had trips when i got 50 and trips when i got zero!
