Mining tritium question

I don’t really know anything about mining. However, I do have a carrier that has mostly just been sitting around. I know a lot of people use them for exploration, how long does it usually take to mine a 100t or so of trit? Is laser or deep core the preferred method?

It's not too bad to mine. In my experience, subsurface mining is the fastest way to mine it, and you can get maybe 200 tons per hour on a good day. Pretty much any single hotspot is good enough, though if you find a double hotspot, you can laser mine as you ssd mine and increase your mining rate a tad.

Whatever you do, don't ssd mine outside of a hotspot. It doesn't even need to be a tritium hotspot, ANY hotspot increases ssd output by 60%.

Mine more profitable stuff, like platinum at the moment, then sell that and use the profits to buy tritium.
Nah, you make an extra turn here;p
Just get bromellite missions ( usually the pay is 10-20 millions for 20-45 tons of brome) and WHEN you get in that ring mining brome for millions, you will get 1 in 5 or or 1 in 6 stones WITH tritium or a mix of brome and tritium.
By the Time I mined 100 tomes of brome usually I do have 15-25 of tritium also in my cargo. If I go with the Queen of Miners - that is, her Majesty the Cutter - when I fill those huge cargo holes of 512 tones I DO have some 60-80 tones of tritium also. And this is pointing at BROME hot spots. If I choose a Trit hot spot, will be 2x more. But much less brome....
So, I return, hand over the brome, make 1-200 millions for, AND I keep the trit for myself.
Win / win situation.

PS - miners mantra - Hot Spot for Brome = will get you trit, and vice versa, ( one come with other, usually - AND in the mix you may add LPDs also) like Platinum fields will give you also Gold , Silver, Palladium , Painite ( thats trash now...) AND the very procured for great creds - OSMIUM. Much better than painite and, imho, a better one than Platinum.
ALL easy & cheap to get by simple surface lasers builds.

Out in the black, laser will get 80 - 120t per hour, my Python which is set for SSD just doing glowing rocks will do 170t in about an hour.
Here in the bubble I can do the same, BUT I prefer a sweeter mix - half that tritium BUT a 150-200 millions extra in my account. Are places with ResH "linked" to tritium hot spots.
Just dive in, with a good armed miner ( a Conda for ex) AND for the extra frags you get from stones you will double the Tritium harvest.
Rocks with 15-25% Tritium will get you 10-16 tones of Tritium - in under 1 minute. But yeah, you need to deal with Pirates from time to time - if you get the right mix of weapons , you can do the job with not much sweat.

May I ask, how did you get a carrier without mining?

Beside the mining rushes, I have no idea how one could possibly get this kind of money by other means.

game is on since 5 years. the first commander hitting triple elite, onepercent, did so a week after launch. that included 1 billion in trade profit irrc - when maximum credit per ton profit was around 1500 cr/t, and missions (which anyway paid not much) didn't add towards it.

somebody like him could have had a carrier in 5 weeks after launch, so anybody could get one with a-b-a trade runs much faster today.

i know quite some players who got their FC simply by exploration.

Right now, massacre missions can get you half billion / day with no big sweat....

I did virtually no mining before getting my Carrier. I had been playing since 2017, so had had plenty of time to build up some savings, I mainly paid for mine through trading but I also did this other thing for exploration data. I would head out, say, 7-10,000ly to one point. hit a 90degree angle, head over another few thousand light years then point home, and well, get home. That paid out loads of cash. I would FSS all systems entered, whether they were previously discovered or not. DSS things like ELWs, Was, WAs. It all mounts up. I could bash one of those treks out in under a week. I'd then have a week of doing trade hauling, you get allied with a faction and find yourself accepting 10m + for a one jump delivery. Massacre missions right now are earning me around 100-150m in 3 or 4 days and I'm not even trying, I do other things as well in the same 3-4 days.

A mixture of these things over the years gave me (eventually) enough cash to buy the Carrier. I've never used a gold rush, never used an exploit.

There were other gold mines before mining.
Mining in late 2018 had the multiple abrasion blaster bug, which let you fill your hold with core mined stuff very quickly.
Then there was the 17 Draconis mission stacking. Grab 20 skimmer or base scanning missions, do 1 trip, presto! lots of cash!
When passenger missions were first released, they would pay a lot more for far travels. so 45 mins in SC would net you around the 50m or so. Load'em up, watch TV and cash in.
Robigo/CEO/Sothis was an other popular one (still is).

So really, if you've been playing for the past 5 years, you would have seen a lot of gold mines to be farmed while they lasted.
The biggest one was the egg and son of egg. That one was a cash pinata. The more you kicked it, the more it spilled. And the player base kicked it really hard.

OK, I see. I have been playing this on and off for many years and participated in a great many of those gold rushes. Except for the ones that were clear exploits, like the egg.
But even with all the rushes and all the grinds back in those days, I never made money anywhere near the billion mark. I guess I just wasn't up for too much grinding. I only started to make serious money with the void opal and later LTD rushes. Hence my question.

I took my FC to Colonia around Christmas, and back to the bubble again a few weeks ago. Instead of mining it, I set up a buy order of 8,000t Tritium @75k credits before my trip, which was fulfilled by other players within two hours (this surprised me as 75k isn't the highest price around).

I was able to sell 1,000t in Colonia to another carrier for a decent profit of about 50k per ton, and still had about 300t of Tritium left when I arrived back in the Bubble. For mini jumps within the Colonia region I topped up the FC tank by mining in a double hotspot there now and then, 150t in roughly an hour or so. Wouldn't want to rely on mining en-route because I don't enjoy prolongued trips in the black (like Frillop would for example), but getting the credits to buy the Tritium either at premium prices so other players can do the loading for you, or instead buying at the ~50k market prices and load it yourself works pretty well for me.
