I went mining last night for the first time (ha! just when first (or is that latest) encounter happens. Mainly driven because of engineers.
Loved it.
Did some background reading on mining (how to do it!) and with the basics in mind I decided a bit of deep-end learning would be best.
Loaded up with what I thought was an obscene 50 limpets and flew
this Anaconda (based on suggestions elsewhere on here) out to
Delkar 7 to mine the pristine rings. Avoided the RES and instead plumbed straight for the densest looking section of the inner metallic ring. It's always pretty to fly around asteroids isn't it.
Tried a prospector limpet without really knowing what I was doing. Not much happened and I wasted it, so instead I started firing my lasers and dropping limpets (figured I'd go do some prospector reading which I've now done). MAN IT WAS FAST. Suddenly I had some Bertrandite. HA!

. Did it again and again and my refinery was full - kept getting warnings about this but just to hell with it I carried on. Limpets kept dieing on me, I suspect I need to treat them with more care and wait for them too. Quite soon my fifty limpets ran out and I had a bunch of stuff in my cargo. I carried on myself with cargo scoop but this time I scanned the fragments and either mined or moved on, also checking my refinery to start to ignore or dump the rubbish. I relied on using the planet in the background to keep me charted on a roughly straight line to avoid doubling up on asteroid checking. Then it was late and with work the next day I called it a night.
This evening I'm going to reload on Limpets (don't know maybe got for 150 this time), try some prospecting for Painite. I'll also practice much more methodical refinery usage. Will need to get hold of cost chart for each mineral to determine what can go. I'm thinking initially to ignore bertrandite and indite.
I have to say it was relaxing and engrossing going from beautiful giant asteroid to asteroid. Tonight I'll have some music playing in the background and will probably lose track of time completely - also I think this is where VR would be very useful as the navigation to other asteroids would be somewhat easier. Headlook is ok, but VR would be better.
