Mission Bug?

Hey guys,

Im fairly new to the game, although i used to play a ton of Elite back in the day and X and all that jazz so I totally get the concept.
My predicament is thus : I took on a very low level mission to transport some silver, 3 ton. So all was good, I found the system jumped to it and engaged
Supercruise in the system, on the way I saw an unidentified signal source so I thought i'd check it out.

When i arrived there was one NPC who contacted me saying something along the lines of "screw these guys over and ill pay you 3.5k" I naturally
declined by pressing decline as I was receiving 12k from the mission for delivering the silver anyway.

At this point I was fined 15k by failing the mission?? Is this right? I can't really understand what else I could have done in the situation because when I went into contracts
to check the status of my original silver running mission it had changed to this new "knife in the back" one and this was before I even declined the guys offer??

Please help as this is quite infuriating as I'm just starting out and can't really afford 15k fine.

I think this is unclear and confusing in the game at the moment. When you 'declined' the offer, you actually declined the whole transaction.

You should do nothing on the transaction tab after receiving an alternative offer, just deliver to your preferred recipient.

I think you'll have to pay the fine though, but after you've sold the silver on the black market, hopefully it's not too much.

You didn't decline, you abandoned the mission. You Don't need to do anything except decide where to deliver. You'll now have stolen goods in your hold too. Don't get scanned. Welcome to the cutthroat world of Elite.

Yeah but the mission I declined was the only one in my contracts titled "A knife in the dark", the other original one was not even there anymore, so are you saying that if I'd just carried on to location
then I could have completed the original mission? I find that hard to believe as the mission had gone so I couldn't see the location or system of the original drop.

Okay cool, well many thanks for the reply, I'll try and sell the "stolen" silver and soldier on!.
If it happens again i'll try and continue my original flightpath.
