Mission Types

1. An asteroid is in path to collide with an inhabited planet. Your mission is to find the asteroid and divert the path from collision.

2. Due an accident a mining team has been stranded on an asteroid. Your job is to find their beacon and rescue them before they run out of supplies and air.

3. A star is about to supernova. Your job is to evacuate inhabitants and lifeforms of this planet to new terraformed planets.
- The universal law states that these lifeforms can be taken only to new terraformed planets.

4. Your job is to take NAV satellites to orbits.

5. Find and collect samples from new alien lifeforms.

I like the first 3 a lot. Last two seem a bit simple with the fourth being currently reserved for the Thargoids.

6. Surface outpost / base / installation creation: deliver construction materials for creation of new surface bases:

-small: 1000 tons
- medium: 7500 tons
- Installations: 25,000 tons
etc etc

Get community goal style badge etc as well as trader rank and credits - and similar to “discovered by” exploration infamy - have a Data Point that includes “This base created by....” listing all the cargo haulers that helped...

Have a monthly community poll to select the system getting the new outpost @ 10 ly from “the edge of the bubble” - so the bubble diameter would slowly expand @ maximum 120 ly / calendar year..

This actually was a mission in the original Elite. It would always kill you unless you knew how to complete it (I knew of two ways). I would like to see this mission return, or something similar.

The issue is that would be a one-off event, not a bit of optional content for everyone to experience in full if they seek it out. If I recall correctly, supernovae take place in our galaxy at a rate of around one per century, so it would be odd to have tens of thousands of novae for each Cmdr to do it even just once. I could be wrong about the frequency, but it is still going to be a one-off in ED.

About the only thing I could think of to make a go of a supernova mission is for there to be science teams out looking at supernova candidates within say 2000ly of Sol, eg Betelgeuse. When a Cmdr comes across one of these randomly chosen star systems, there arises an impromptu-passenger mission to get the scientists to safety... If the Cmdr loses the ship in the rescue attempt then the scenario resets for another Cmdr to have a go, the star is unharmed, and any Cmdr who tries and fails and then speaks of it is dismissed as having Space Madness because the star is still there. Only successful completion of this one-off passenger mission counts as the whole event completed, and the Cmdr who pulls it off gets credits and a decal, or something like that. Naturally, it gets a big write-up in GalNet. This would make a nice Q4 Christmas present for explorers to compete against each other for, or failing that, an Easter gift in Q2 next year.

Yes, how about more missions for good guys that aren't just cargo runs, mail delivery, and charity? How about protection missions to protect relief ships and etc., and to protect those convoys I keep seeing dispersing at USSes - and have those convoys jump somewhere and not just sit there. These could also be good for wings and squadrons. I assume missions like this, other than killing x-many pirates, don't exist, but I haven't done missions in a while.
