The size is sorta right, but the ships flying out means that it still takes up a huge amount of the sig. I want as slim a signature as possible! The ships are cool, mind. The border needs to be a bit darker for a gold-ish effect, but I'm guessing that's just a quick insert from you :)

I understand you were going for calligraphy, but I'm guessing none of us are quill and parchment writers so it's not something we identify with too much.

Mobius in Photoshop when you double click next to a layer name, it should open a Layer Style. If you have the main 'box' layer of the sig selected you should then be able to use 'Stroke' to create the boarder rather than having to make lines. Use 'Position' - 'inside' to get nice sharp edges. If you use outside it will radius the corner pixel. In there is also where you find things like Drop Shadow and Outer Glow.

The idea is not so much to get a 3D effect but to create a separation between the text and the background image. Just a couple of pixels can do this for you. You can also use Outer Glow and use a lite grey as the colour - it'll just pop the lettering out a little without overdoing a 3D effect. I'll see if I can make you some demos to show you what I mean.

Plain - The yellow not great to view against the white but ok against the grey. What we want to do is 'pop' the whole set of the text.

Now with a drop shadow - You'll see that it makes the text a whole bunch easier to read.

And for variation - with a 1px stroke - it's far more subtle than the drop shadow because I've set the opacity to 70% but all you're trying to do it make it more readable.

I've also set a 1px stroke around the boarder to tidy it up a little. Because you're working with transparant GIFs I'd create 2 layers, one that is a cutout of the ship and the other the rectangle of the background. Put the inner stroke on the background and then drop the ship over the top. Even easier would be to clone the entire layer, do the stroke and send that layer to the back then erase the edges to bring the boarder through. It'll save you trying to cut the ship out entirely which is a pain in the rear end.

Anyone wanting to personalise images like Drew, That doesn't have Photoshop or doesn't want to splash the cash on it, I would recommend Gimp: http://www.gimp.org/ it is completely free, and does a great job of layers, and editing, transparency, shading, effects, animation, filters etc. As an example If you look at my avatar with the fire behind the ED badge, that was done with Gimp.

I'd also recommend Paint.NET, as I find it more approachable than Gimp and it deals with transparencies more intuitively. Gimp is a bit better for layers, mind.

again thanks for that info, having used your tips they look much better,
I just have to be carful about fonts and trying not to make them to garish.
still early days and ive still got 500 other options that i need to figure out.

Ooh, nice! Right sort of size and style. I think the writing could pop out a little more, like in your Elite Reclamation one, but I'm guessing you're holding back till you get the font settled. I'd suggest Constantia as a slightly nicer font - very similar but a little bolder. It should be a standard font you have. The "Writer" text should perhaps be a slightly different colour too I'd suggest, or maybe just have a little texture to it.

The Elite logo looks a little off... Not sure what to suggest, it is nice to have in there, but it looks wrong in that form.

Sorry, I did warn I'd be fussy :/ I do really like the changes though! :)

What do the other Anthology writers think?

But a quick question - how do we attach a signiture to our posts automatically - I have looked though my profile settings and cannot find anything.

@Slothy at the top of the screen, just below 'Post Reply,' click on User CP and one of the options there is edit signature.

click on your name in the top right
this will open your profile window
at the top left click User CP
on the left hand colum under settings and option clickEdit Signature
you will now see a new text entry window in there paste the address that is hosting your siginature.

the address should have
at the end of it like below


i strongly suggest that you save the pic to your computer and then upload it to photbucket or some other image hosting site, they are all free to use and most give you the link including the IMG bits so its pretty much cut and paste.

to display this this text ive had to add a space at the front, but this is what the link would look like.

Hi Slothy,

Signatures are disabled for new posters in their first few posts, this is to combat spam advertising on the forum.

After a few more posts if you check you User CP again and click on the Signatures tab you should see the add signature options avaliable.

Any problems let me know :D
