Moderators? More like onesiderators...

Well, my experience has been that some moderators are more impartial than others, especially where certain topics are concerned. Just my experience mind you, and I'm sure they're all great guys and gals in reality.

Absolutely :D You know, it makes a refreshing change to be on a site where people 'get' the references.

With age and experience comes the ability to spot an in-joke or cultural reference. Mind you, anything from the last decade goes way over my head

I'll tell you what ruins the forums for me:
1. Overentitled rants about how the game isn't (yet) exactly the orgasmic experience that the poster feels he deserves; after all they had a whole day since his last complaint to make the code perfect and without bugs; if you don't like the game, don't play it. Come back in six months when it's done and the bugs have been worked out of the final release. Meanwhile remember that you did not commission a game; you contributed to the funding. There's a difference.
2. Complaints about moderation, because poster is not treated like the special little flower his mum always said he was. If you don't like the forums, don't post here!

OMG his Mum is going to come after you with great big rolling pin.

Guys and girls working for nothing to keep this board informative need a little more respect then this. You don't like it here? Don't let the door hit you on your way out...

Bye *waves*

I'm no supporter of the OP, but that's the most stalky, baity and disrespectful post I've seen from a mod.

It's not the mod's who are intolerant and have a tendency to put down dissent.

People who live in glass houses & all that.

On how many forums are you a moderator?

Being a moderator is really a chore if you try to do it decently. And most of the time you just get flak from morons who don't grasp the difference between shouting obscenities and constructive criticism.

Never been a mod, only an admin (which comes default with owning a forum).

I recommend you to a copy of Psychology 101 regarding why people seek positions of authority (either overtly or "who, you want ME to be a mod? Aw shucks...well, not really my bag but...OK!") ;)

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
That could be because nothing of cultural significance has been made in the last decade?

<ruruns

" Get off my lawn!" much Yaffs? Heh heh.

Well I'm a mod because I was asked and felt it would be a honor to give back to the community. It can be fun, sure, but it can also be work and it can be stressful. I've gotten sick to my stomach once or twice wondering if I'd made a bad call. I do take my responsibility seriously. And yeah, on occasion we get some .....colorful PMs.

Its not like we all just sit around in our volcano fortress and plan how to best abuse our powers. Well....not every day anyway.

Actually Gollum came with the package when we took over the lease on a certain volcano lair, nothing we can do about it I'm sorry.

And you wouldn't like his idea of fun :)

Well I have only ever had dealings with one Mod:This one ^^

And I for one think he is a very very nice chap........so there!:p

Just seen enough many drama queens like the OP to not really have much respect to them. If one's leaving, it's kinds of courteus to say 'bye', however :p

The Moderator who shall not be Blamed....
Volunteer Moderator
I've just had a chance to read through this thread and wanted to put my personal feelings across.

And considering their many many personal shortcomings (I'm thinking of TJ in particular)

A fair point well made, I'm quite adept at slipping out of my straight jacket and headbutting the keyboard rapidly before Ed and or Michael grab me and administer a fresh batch of catnip to calm me down before tightening the straps a bit more.

TJ is an exemplar of forum mods

That's it, we;re all doomed.

and Brett C does a lot of good behind the scenes work. Geraldine was awesome too... That's pretty much all the comments I can write without getting an infraction. :)

I do agree on both points though. BrettC and many of the other mods worked very, very long hours for weeks before the changeover was even announced and they put in a truly massive amount of hard work to get the transition from the old forum to our now shiny home as smooth as possible and trust me Brett still is working very hard in the background tweaking and adjusting things constantly.

I also agree about Geraldine, a lovely person and devoted a massive amount of time to help out on the forum.

Ok, onto the main point of this thread.

There are many threads created here that are critical of Either FD, Elite Dangerous and occasionally yep us mods as well.

If a thread is created that is critical of something here etc as long as its.

a) Polite and respectful to everyone.
b) Though out and a considered viewpoint of a genuine concern on a particular subject.
c) Not a obvious attempt to bait others or FD into posting a negative response.
d) Follows the forum rules.

Then I can't see why it should not be kept open.

Some of the reasons to why a thread may be closed are when it starts to degenerate into personal attacks on other forum members/Frontier/ FD staff this behaviour is not acceptable in real life and I always fail to understand why some feel that it's fine to do so on the forum, a mod will at that point most likely step in and request that the personal attacks stop and that thread stays on topic. if it continues the thread may be temporarily or permanently closed. If a thread becomes circular with the same points being hashed over and over with no progression and logical conclusion it may be decided that the thread has run it's course, it's not a slight on the OP or anyone else just that everything that can be said has been.

We do take the time to discuss the best course of action when possible between each other and with The FD staff on how we proceed and admittedly on occasion we may get it wrong. there is a process in place for when you feel this may have taken place, throwing toys out of the pram on the forum is not the way to go about it. and yes as mentioned we're only human and everyone is allowed to make a mistake sometimes. What we don't have is Moderators rampaging around the forum closing threads, swinging the banhammer warning and banning everyone in sight....yet... ;)

A hell of a lot of work does go on behind the scenes with rooting out spambots, approving posts from new posters, answering PM's that are asking for help on many aspects of the forum and a frontier game, dealing with the sometimes downright aggressive posts and PMs from someone who feels that they have been treated badly in some way and responding to reported threads. Along with merging many many many new threads that have been created into existing threads (I'll wait for MikeSnos to chip in on this one), moving any threads that may have been posted in the wrong place to the correct area with a redirect so they can see where their post has gone, along with the more visible side of moderating i.e. welcoming new forum members who take the time to introduce themselves. The list goes on.

As mentioned, we do this voluntarily to help Frontier and the forum members out and do so for various reasons either the love of Elite, a desire to help others or in my case rehabilitation for probably not being quite right in the head.

There can be a fine line on what is considered acceptable on the forum and I personally for the five years I was a member of the forum before becoming a Mod nearly two years ago did/do consider exactly what context any post I make and how it could be potentially misconstrued. humour can be subjective and sometimes the true intention can be missed, the emotion behind a line of text isn't always easy to convey.

For those who stated that "well there was a thread like that that didn't get closed etc so why cant I make one." My reply is "well why didn't you report it?" The forum moves so fast, even with twice the number of Mods we would still miss things, that's what the report function is for letting us know when something occurs that we should be made aware of. So, let us know and we will look into it. Frontier has repeatedly stated that they want the forum to be a place that is family friendly and has set out the rules that they expect everyone to conform to. Common sense would say that attempting to (for example) bypassing the filters will result in it being picked up on and reported. In the majority of cases a mod on picking up the report will edit the post and send a friendly PM reminding them of the rules set by Frontier, repeated attempts will then result in a warning and or infraction.

As the forum continues to grow, input from the forum members will become more and more vital to help keep it a safe and friendly place for anyone of any age to visit. Honestly we really couldn't do it without your help. So to those who take the time to help other on the forum, let us know if there is a problem and generally help to make it the great place it is. Thanks. :)
