Modified Scanners - worth it?

Did someone say long range scanners? \o/

Long range scanners are definitely worth it for the cherry picking kind of explorers. Not for scanning distant stars, but for cutting down on scan times on individual planets. You save roughly 10-15 seconds per planet you scan, in a normal system. That's one jump saved on every 4-5 planet you scan.
If you prefer scanning everything in systems, fast scanners are superior. Scanning all the moons around a gas giant in half the normal time? That pays off pretty fast, I'd say. :)

VY Canis Majoris well before the modded scanner. Also after that distance I just gave up, scanned it and left.

I wonder what's the max range without mods and with long range mod...

y'know I really ought to go there sometime... I've still not done any of the main tourist destinations yet. I'm like that weird guy you meet who only ever books his own holidays, no package deals and wanders off into the mountains rather than sit on the beach :)

For me this is why EXPLORATION is the key stone of elite. Nothing beats it for pure choice and involvement. PvP builds are fairly stock and apart from a few mavericks ltd to certain ships. Trading isn't much different, yeah you can do it in any ship but again it's a basic stock build no matter what ship your in. Only in exploration can you get to the real differences in characteristics between ships, only in exploration do your choice of upgrades and modules have truly profound effects on what u can do.

Do you go for a full on stripped down distance jumper or mid range?
Do you take shields and weapons?
Do you need a srv? Or
Spend a little bit of weight to gain a little bit of time?

Each ship brings a different look at each question and for me only when you build an exploration ship do you finally get to the real characteristics of the ships in ED and the root of the game.

You're not the only one. I've sent my fair share out in the black, with more than a few systems visited, and have not made it to any of the explorers pilgrimage spots...Sag A*, Beagle Point, Barnards Loop, Beetleguice, Colonia...none of them, not even Maia. Probably the one that comes closest to qualifying would be Deciat to see Farseer.
