Module Can't Be Used in This Cockpit Mode??

So I'm trying to scan my first planet, and in both normal flight and supercruise I get a popup alert saying "Module Cannot Be Used in This Cockpit Mode". Which mode should I be in? Normal flight or SC?

Help!

Under mode switches in your controls there is a "switch hud mode" option. Just bind and switch between combat and analysis mode as required.

Ok I'm in SC, but just in my normal view/screen/HUD. What's Anaylsis Mode? How do I get to it?

After four years I'd sort of forgotten how just awful FD makes this game for noobs, or CMDRs learning new stuff. Nothing's explained or intuitive! :)

There is a new button you must define.

Now there are 2 modes - Combat or Analysis

Guns only shoot in combat mode

FSS and DSS only work in analysis mode. Plus these need you to be in SC.

I think that the scanner for geological objects also needs to be in analysis mode.

Note the things you discover in analysis mode is only visible in the left hand contacts panel when you are in analysis mode.

Ok, I'm grasping it now, but where in the cockpit is the button on the HUD to change the mode?

It is not in the cockpit, you must bind a key in the controls menu.

Are you FOOKIN KIDDING ME!

I play in VR. Key binds to my HOTAS are extremely "precious" as I can't see my keyboard. I resort to picking a lot of "non-time-critical functions" off the side menus.

Hmmmm, maybe I should trade my primary or secondary fire buttons, or my SC button...

Not on any side menu? This appears to be an incredibly thoughtless implementation...

Ok, thank you all. I understand now. I bound a key to toggle the mode on/off. Then I had to go back to controls to bind the specific controls once in the analysis mode in order to make the target splat shots on the surface work. Eventually covered 100% of the surface and got my reward. This seems infinitely more fiddly and time consuming that say just SC'ing around, pointing the nose at an object, and scanning it or getting close enough to it that the Detailed Surface Scanner kicked in. Ho hum. #progress.

Before I could scan systems relatively quickly. This - toggle modes.... pepper the surface with five or six cannon splat shots, etc. is going to slow down exploring massively.

Depending on your HOTAS, try either a modifier button for second level keybinds (as in: hold one button while pressing another).
If your HOTAS has a mode switch, you can use the software that came with it to define custom keybinds for those modes and then assign those in ED.
I use the G940 HOTAS with a mode switch and must have mapped at least 60 things in ED via this method.

Plug in a joypad - I'm using an old Gravis Eliminator - but an xbox controller or similar should work as well - mine is now sat between throttle and joystick on the desk in front of me - so reachable if in vr.
ED at least seems to have no problem with multile joypads\hotas\edtracker all being connected at once.
As I said elsewhere this scanning thing is designed for a joypad - using anything else feels like trying to use your cars steering wheel to type a document - where's that old Onion article ?

Pre binds wanted me to change my fa off bind amongst others. Blimey. So bind another lot. Sequence of already bounds ensues. Now lost track...oh god help us now having to redefine the blooming lot again. Gave up. Think I will play cqc until I have more patience!
