Monitor upgrade advice please

Hi there,
I have a nvidia 3080. I have played with a 27" 1080p 60hz monitor for years. I can physically fit a 32" monitor and would like to upgrade the size, and possibly the resolution to the newer 1440 resolution.
I like the graphics of Odyssey and run it at ultra, and very rarely have a hitch in the game (I've played 10-20 hours past few weeks and noticed one or two times had a half second hitch, but I remember thinking I might have been alt -tabbing or something).
What I'm concerned about it having to turn down settings if I get a bigger resolution, but I bought the 3080 because my previous 680 lasted me a very long time, so I was hoping someone here would be able to confirm if it runs 1440p on ultra.
Also, if you could recommend a monitor or brand that is mediumly priced (the one I am looking at is only $300 canadian on sale), preferably one with speakers built in, or I would have to buy speakers too. Thankss

I have an Nvidia 3080. I play on 4K Ultra with VSync 60Hz, but also turn off the Upscaling so its 4K native @ 60Hz.

If I watch the FPS counter, I see it doesn't always run at 60FPS, sometimes as low as 40-ish consistently. If I watch GPU and CPU load, I don't see them hitting max, more like 70-80%. I've also seen occasional instances (e.g. Titan assaults in Open) where the FPS drops to low teens/single digits for a few seconds, which I hear is a known bug not a performance issue.

If you like graphs, Green for GPU (Nvidia), Blue for CPU (Intel), Yellow for total power (& Purple for cooling)

1440p Ultra should be 60Hz without any issues.

I have a RTX3070Ti (8GB) and that runs ultra at 1440 no problem. (In fact it runs Ultra at 4k no problem but the card fans run faster, so noisier and toasty.) So the 3080 should have no issues.

(Can't help with the monitor, I recently replaced my 32" 4K ips with a 32" 4K OLED so a bit beyond your stated price point.)

P.S. You will be extremely happy going up to a 32" 1440 display, it is such an improvement over 1080 that you will wish you had done it years ago. :)

thanks. that is a neat graph!

thank you, glad to hear it. was the 4k upgrade worth it as much as the 1440? i hadn't even really considered 4k, i didn't know the card would handle it

As someone who switched from 4K 60Hz to 1440p 165Hz (LG UltraGear 32GN600-B), I'd say to stick to 1440p. While not all games will run 120Hz+ (and the effects from 60Hz to 120Hz aren't that amazing and depend a lot on the specific game), the changes from 4K to 1440p weren't noticeable at all. Heck, majority of current games are running on 4K with upscaling methods, which means you actually are getting just a better stretched version of the original textures (except the texture upscaling methods have a low cost to the GPU and better result than your average stretching, but still, not native 4K).

Your biggest problem will be finding non-curved monitors at that resolution and refresh rate. The LG UltraGear 32GN600-B was the only one I found for 1440p 120Hz+ that wasn't a headache-inducer overhyped & overpriced useless curved monitor (because either they make up new stuff to keep raising prices, or the investors panic). And it still was a bit of a letdown for the high price in late 2021: normal use and 3 years later it has severe light bleed, and not the uniform kind, the strong 1-inch strand kind, as if someone lighted a match at the bottom of it. Aside from that, the screen loses a few pixels on the borders (about 5 lines per border I think, maybe less).

Elite in particular doesn't go above 60fps, if I remember correctly (I think it's limited by the engine). And even at 1440p 60fps and no uspcaling, it still runs really well on a 3070 (reduce a bit of performance room because hot country, so thermal baseline is higher). Still dips sometimes (while GPU and CPU usage are comfortable below 70%), but understandable, FDev has been ironing out the new engine for Ody for some time, and there is a mix of visual glitches along with some performance bottlenecks (a long way from Ody's beta... THOSE were the times of dips). But I'll take performance increase over time instead of the contrary: had to stop playing 2 games because of that, ones that I could run on 1440p 120fps at ultra/high no problems, and now will cause thermal shutdown if on medium and locked at 60fps.

If you don't know about it yet, rtings dot com (you can search for rtings on google) have pretty good standarized reviews for lots of stuff (TVs, headphones, monitors), with both reductive scores + pros-and-cons lists if you don't want the nitty-gritty, and complete explanation of every feature and strong points of the item. It should help you find a good fit for you.

You do notice the increased sharpness but to be honest it is almost insignificant in Elite, certainly the extra GPU load causes extra heat hence increased fan speed and associated noise. To be frank, I run ED at 1440 Ultra (in-game limiter at 60) just for that reason and the crispness of ED at 1440 is great. I don't do ground combat but would have issues with frame rate at 4K (less than 50ish fps) for that whereas at 1440 there is no problem. Some games benefit greatly from 4K - for me flight sim is where it is most useful (apart of course from viewing entertainment sources - streaming movies, TV etc).

One thing about 4K monitor that might bother people is the icon / text size when running native resolution, for that reason I have windows set to scale that stuff by 150% (i.e. it looks like 1440).

EDIT:

P.S. Just to be clear, in case I am giving the wrong impression above - You will I am sure be very happy with a 1440 monitor, you don't need 4K for Elite.

P.P.S. You are missing out on the amazing audio of Elite Dangerous if you are relying on in-monitor speakers. I don't like wearing a headset during gaming so I have a surround-sound speaker system and Elite audio is the bees' knees, amazingly immersive. I also have a small sound-bar under the monitor for other purposes. Even though it is a good quality Bose soundbar, the Elite experience is definitely less enjoyable if I use the soundbar for it rather than the surround speaker system.

The engine limit is at least 300fps. I have a 3440x1440/144Hz display. In space and at most stations, the framerate usually hits the cap I've set - 144fps. Planetary surfaces are fine, although certain lighting angles and large, complex ports can cause the fps to drop closer to 120.

Id take ultra wide over 4k any day (certainly if your main game is something like Elite)

I also play on 3440x1440 on a rtx3080.
No problem hitting my monitors 175hz. I did set the output to 90hz. Less sound/heat and my vision up close was once much better :ROFLMAO:. It would be a waste of energy.

Hey, so I went with a 1440 Asus, and I really really like it. I was going to buy a 4k Samsung but Best Buy was sold out. Got a 32 inch, its awesome. I also was THIS close to getting a ultra wide screen but the hutch on my desk would not fit it by about 4 inches, I was willing to live with it but in the end went with this one. No speakers, so I bought a razer sound bar, not very expensive. I use a nicer headset for gaming with surround sound that is decent, I think. The speakers are mostly for my wife when she watches youtube, no headset goes on her head lol.
I appreciate your responses, thanks.

I went with 32" 1440, Best Buy did have a attractive ultra wide, with built in speakers, and I loved it. In the end, it was too wide for my hutch on my desk, I still almost bought it, I am horrible at making decisions and after awhile I just grabbed this 32" and hit the road. Until your response I hadn't considered the ultrawide. I was so close

I have a 1440p 27" Samsung Odyssey G7 which I bought 4 years ago and absolutely love. I wrote about it more here:

I’m not sure you can get that model anymore but they still make the Odyssey series. It is curved tho' (quite heavily by industry standards at the time) and I think there's a lot of personal taste over that. I sit close to the screen and have head tracking so it feels quite natural to me. It did take some getting used to tho', especially out of game when just doing day to day things in Windows.

I have everything on Ultra, have locked the framerate at 144fps and get that or close to it most of the time. Now I do have a 4070 but on the other hand I’m also running with 1.5x super sampling to improve aliasing so I think your 3080 should easily manage well over 60fps pretty much all the time if you’re not doing that.
