Moon base concept art - one thing that bothers me.

One thing that bothers me about that concept art of the lunar base.

Being born in the 70's and brought up in the 80's.

Moon bases's weren't hip anymore and still aren't now, we're down to Dome, Modules, and Syd-Mead(Nostromo) interiors...if we are lucky.

That concept art, hmmmm, makes me feel like a a kid again, looking at (old) sci-fi books.

Which leads me into my problem.

Perception based estimates, guesses and gap filling are based on prior experience (prejudice).

So those big bay windows on the left.....why they look like some kind of lounge...with a hint of beige.

Beige leather seats?
Here is my brain fantasising that lounge.

Images you find from googling 1960's airports

(you know the kind of design that was popular at the time when fancy moon base concept art was being drawn).

No one else suffering from cultural brainwashing ?

No cultural brain washing here either.

I cannot be brainwashed because I have no brain.

Interesting topic. :)
I think that in the year 3300 mankind would have been living on planets for so long that we would have passed the era of the functioning design and would be in a state where we could actually 'design' space station interiors.

It could look like anything really.
But if we're talking great techy interior design, then I think Alien Isolation wins. Computer terminals for all kinds of access, flickering lights, boxes stacked on each other, cables running along the walls, cables on the floor that looks like someone just threw it there for the time being etc.
That's how I see the future. :)

Flickering lights, together with static on screens and the usual analogue radio transmission distortions are the big immersion breakers in any scifi movie for me. Analogue tech and old tech in a futuristic setting just to give the audience a clue based on their own limited experiences. Throw in some unusable pseudo futuristic design that is basically only an extrem from of the fashion of the week design - to let the audience know it's modern design. Nothing looks more dated than futuristic designs from 5 years ago.

That's the main problem with scifi in many cases. Often it's just old tech with added magic and some pseudo tech babble that is supposed to distract that everything is just old tech and magic. Flickering light …

so...

How should the interior of a Space Station look then?

It would depend on the setting of the movie, story or game. A future where space stations are very common and even the standard habitat for most humans would require a society that can mass produce space stations. Everything would be designed around the need to produce the objects fast, cheap and in high quantities.

- nothing that resembles old or analogue tech (CRTs, analogue audio or video distortions, flickering lights)
- the basic construction of space stations would be made up from standard modules that where mass produced
- most interior design elements would be simple objects that are easy to manufacture, simple shapes, mass produced objects. Standard objects (chairs, desks…) would probably look very similar to current day objects.
- space stations need to be easily serviceable. Function would have a high priority as malfunctions could result in death (or worse: no profit).
- space is valuable and any design element that wastes space just for the look would be something not used or only used in the rooms of very, very wealthy individuals or corporations for specific purposes.

The result would be boring and highly functional. Just like most current day interiors are boring and interchangeable. Interior design wouldn't be much different to present day interior design, slight variations but nothing more.

Y'see, I can't think about moon bases without thinking of Space 1999, and that gets me thinking about the interiors of Moonbase Alpha, and then that gets me thinking about the Eagle ships from that series, and then that gets me thinking, 'damn, I really want one of *those* Eagles...'

Okay, now I want to re-watch Space 1999.

Edited:

Also, I want lava lamps in my moon bases. And on my spaceships. Lava lamps *everywhere*. :p

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GyBfZ1xLhM I just put this on another thread, thought it was relevant :)

Time to do some research on lounge areas for refineries and cargo ship

well I would argue - fully clothed tight lycra , with embedded corsets for those skimpy waistlines, and framework of padding around the chest area for 1950 support that forces glands sacks out perpendicularly away from the chest regardless of body orientation, even led down on a medical examination table.

After a decade or two on sci-fi from birth, I was taken aback by actual mammary gland mechanics when situated in a reclined position. (lying TV and photoshoped photoshoots).

But hey, NASA are experimenting with pressure suits to squeeze liquids around the body,
and if large chested women have issues with needing double or tripple sports bras to keep stuff in place, micro-gravity is going to be an issue, a framework of padding and support it is.
