More Complex Insurance System - With Premiums

Now before you all groan at the thought of paying premiums on top of the deductible, think about all the gameplay benefits it could offer:

Right off the bat, lets say that the current insurance system is the default policy offered by the Pilot's Federation to all it's members, with the premium paid by them and the deductible by you. So you won't have to pay an ongoing premium if you stick with the default policy, which means on and off players won't suffer from this. The new policy system could have a 1 week policy period that resets each PP cycle, with the policy in effect from when the premium is paid up until the end of the cycle, and premium cost based on how many days are left in the cycle.

So for example what if, say, you could purchase a blanket policy for your fleet, with the premium based on the aggregate value of your assets, and a multi-ship discount afforded based on how many you have. The policy package you can purchase is based on ranks, the same as the limit of liability afforded in the current system, with higher ranks affording a larger limit of liability. The whole purpose of introducing a paid premium system would be for a reduced deductible.

So instead of accepting the default policy afforded by the Pilot's Federation, you purchase a blanket policy for your fleet with a reduced deductible. This would be ideal if your faction/guild/etc. were currently at war and at risk of losing your ships, or you just want to go PVP in something expensive. The upfront premium cost means you won't sweat your now-reduced deductible as much if you blow up.

This could be expanded with a per-ship policy system as well, that further allows gameplay benefits:
So lets say you grab a blanket policy for your fleet in case you want to fly something else, but purchase a per-ship policy for your Cutter. You choose a high-premium package with a low deductible, and for the next week instead of tens of millions per "accident" you may pay only 5-10 million. See why this could be fun? Suddenly the lumbering whale that no way in hell you would ever try to PVP in, suddenly is an option, even if it's just for kicks.

I think a system like this would allow for a lot more gameplay options. You no longer have to take the best ship for the job with the lowest deductible, but instead whatever you feel like. You're still paying for it, but in a way that makes sense realism-wise and frees you up to play how you want.

Final Note: It's also a long-term money sink option, which gives super-rich players something to spend their money on. That's also something we need in this game that we don't have at the moment - things to spend money on once you have everything.

I dunno if I feel like having to manage insurance too much. Simple is good.

I would like to see loot and crafting bring in a way to lower the excess from 5% down though or just a blanket 2% if you're rank 2 or higher for a Powerplay faction and die in Open.

Is doesn't have to be complicated though, and why limit it to PP only? There are plenty of other instances where a more expensive ship isn't feasible because of the risk.

It could be as simple as a menu with selections:
a) Blanket Policy
b) Per-Ship Policy

and a following menu with a slider, letting you input your premium value and the system spits out a resultant deductible. Simple, easy, not complicated and offering expanded game-play opportunities.

This is a well thought out plan with a variety of benefits, but honestly avoiding this sort of stuff in real life is one reason I like Elite

The game needs more depth, I think everyone agrees with that. I'm hoping for more diversity in missions, etc., Someday.
