General / Off-Topic Mortal Engines

"Can fantasy get too dumb?"

Interesting. I'm 50 seconds in and he poses the question "can there be an idea that is too stupid for people to swallow and therefore enjoy?".

Quick answer - no. I absolutely (and unashamedly) enjoyed both the books and the film. Right ... back to the video. I shall return in 15 minutes for my conclusions.

2 minutes in ... wait, what? he hasn't even seen it?!?!?!

3.5 minutes ... oh yeah, sure ... when I'm watching a FANTASY movie I'm totally worrying about the cube square law and structural engineering principles ... yeah, that can totally ruin a FANTASY movie for me! [wacko] /s

4.37 ... fuel economy?!?! ... oh for god's sake [blah]

He then rambles on about weight and stuff for a bit LOT longer.

Look - this is FANTASY (a genre which includes, among other things ... MAGIC ... and yes, I can see the "Harry Potter" books on the bookcase behind you so I know you know this) - sorry but this guy is a prize prat of the very highest order.

6 minutes ... "I don't know much about Mortal Engines apart from seeing small little elements of the story" ... :|[smile][haha]

the minutes pass like hours

no No NO!!! I'm sorry but for the sake of my blood pressure I have to stop listening now.

In conclusion - he appears to be totally confusing SCIENCE with FANTASY and wins my internet of the year award.

The 21st century is a post facts age, as Dangerous Discussion demonstrates.

Thanks for the confirmation, mate.

But, IMHO, yes, Fantasy can get too dumb and unrealistic, but for different reasons.

Watched it and generally enjoyed it. Colourful, eclectic sets with the almost Gilliamesque craziness we have come to expect from Weta. Impressive effects at times, but it seems in this CGI age we have lost the middle-distance shots. Everything is either up close and personal, or sweeping panoramas. Plot is thin and tropy, but then again I loved Fury Road which also did not have the most complex plot.

Good movie, but I wish it would have slowed down at times. I can enjoy fantasy/sci fi without it being on a roller coaster. I might have to go watch Solaris for balance...
