Most of the new UI is just unfamiliar, not bad

I've been reading some of the threads here and on reddit and steam regarding Odyssey, and while much of it is very valid criticism about bugs, server stability and framerates, I'm also seeing a surprising amount of people who are angry just because so many things look different now. I get it, change is scary, but the expansion hasn't even been out for a full week! Give it time! I've been playing all weekend and I'm already getting used to the new galaxy map lmao. I think the P.O.I. and Factions tabs in system view are way handier than the old system view too.

The new starport services and ship repair menus are confusing at first, but fleet carriers have already had this UI for a while. The new ship store is also so much nicer than the old one, you can actually see a render of the ship before buying instead of a fkin orange wireframe lol.

The only genuinely bad UI design-wise is the on-foot LeftAlt wheel, it is terribly stiff and the mouse-to-select is too slow for something that needs to be accessed quickly in the heat of battle. The InSight wheel also looks kinda ugly for something that is supposed to be the iphone of the future, but its pretty functional, getting to contacts, inventory, etc is very fast.

I dunno, I feel like a lot of the response to the new UI is kneejerk negativity just cause people have been playing with the old one for years. I'd rather see devs try to experiment with things like the UI than to leave it untouched and outdated forever out of fear of backlash.

I still have issues with the local and galaxy map, but it’s down to 1 thing really driving me nuts. I have to click and hold to plot a route, but often I’ll go to do that and it will cause my selection to jump around, because you also click and hold and drag to move around.

they fixed the things that were really broken in alpha , so I can get used to the rest of it I guess.

Im getting used to the new UI. A couple things could be changed though. They should go with the premise that nothing in the new UI should take longer/more clicks than the old UI. I haven't used everything yet, but one thing that definitely takes longer is plotting a route. I think, or hope, it's that someone just missed a step, but when it's in, it'll be quicker than before.
Currently, you have to do the selection twice, since it sets it only to the system in the galaxy map, then you have to go into that system (if the data is available) and then select it then set it.
What makes sense is the first time you select and set it, it's supposed to actually select the waypoint in the system, not just to the system.

There is a lot of good idea in the new UI but it's badly organized and the implementation is messed up which makes the whole thing heavy and not really pleasant to use. But indeed, this new UI has the potential to make people forget the old one.

I can get use to the new UI, though I strongly dislike the Galaxy/System map, in my own experience thus far I've found it's very cumbersome to use;
  • I can't press "Back" to exit a planet view, I'm required to scroll out otherwise I'm taken to the GalMap.
  • Applying filters is non-intuitive and strange.
  • Click & Hold to plot a route has given me trouble where upon selecting my destination, my screen moves and cancels the action, in some cases, I've fallen into a mild loop of this.
  • System/Planet Information is needlessly tucked away and I'm having trouble remembering which of these buttons to press.
All-round it feels very over-engineered for aesthetic appeal, I much prefer ED:H and I'm filled with bliss whenever I am graced with it, I'd have more to say, but this is off the top of my head.
If anything, I would like my context menu back upon selecting a planet or system instead of side buttons, but as a whole, it's completely unnecessary in my eyes.

As for the Station UI, I find it functional, just new, I've not been graced with the outfitting screen as of yet, but so far, it's manageable, I quite enjoy the new Shipyard, and the Mission Board is nicely sorted.

Nah, it's just bad. Tons of screen space wasted by screens with huge fonts that contain little information, forcing you to go to another screen and another, equally useless.
Most of it could be presented on one screen, where you can see details, outfit, move modules to and from storage, generous use of hover over tooltips etc. like most PC games.

No, its just bad, an un intuitive.
The Suit/gear customization is outright broken, with a lot of the time when you add an armor piece to your load out, it does not even show up as being added but is still on your character.
The weapon UI does not even show stats, under the stats it shows a magazine bar which IDK what thats even meant to be at this point.
The Map UI is a stright down grade, with just icons and no names to those icons vs the old system which had a list of what each icon was
The Outfitting UI is even worse, its beyond worse its a downgrade, they went from very clearly labled items, to this:

Tell me, what the hell are those circled ones meant to be, with out you ever knowing what they are? What the hell is U? if you did not know what it was what would come to mind? Now look at this same menu from horizons

Look at that, i know exactly what everything is.

I like the new UI. I am a player that is playing Elite on and off when i have time. (like 2-3/ times and weeks per year). The UI that was has always been hard for me to get into, took some time to remember. I feel this new UI is more logical and easier to follow. (Specially the galaxy map - really liked that).

If it were merely different then I'd just adapt and get on with it like I have multiple times before, but this time is different. This time the utility of the UI is objectively worse. They've transitioned to mystery meat navigation and many actions now take additional steps, which is bad for speed and efficiency, but worse than that is the outright loss of information that used to be available to us. A fellow CMDR going by the name Ulon Yuanshi has a thread about it here.
A new coat of paint I can deal with but this is more like they also painted over all the signage and boarded up the doors so you have to crawl through the windows.

You cannot see what modification are on a module, only the stats
Neither can you see the modules on a ship you want to transfer.
Cannot equip used modules from the slot, instead you have to go back and click on stored modules -> and with the terrible servers having extra clicks adds a huge amount of load time.

Until this changes, regardless if you like the ui or not, it is in fact worse than the previous ui.

It's more accessible, but less functional. As typical with these types of design decisions, it's more intuitive for casual users but hurts power users -- there's less info, info is more scattered, there's less overall utility, and it takes significantly more time to perform the same tasks if you have a familiarized flow (but if you aren't familiar with it, then as a casual user, the new one is probably easier).

That observation aside, significant parts of it simply do not function half the time. And some information relating to BGS, exploration, and other gameplay loops is simply gone.

I see where they're going with it, and I'm glad some casual players are finding it more intuitive, but for a dedicated player it's several steps backwards.

Tbh I haven't paid much attention to most of the UI, only because FD did the one thing I was hoping for but never believed they would. They got rid of the awful tooltip type info windows on the Galaxy and System maps. You know, the ones that constantly sprang up when you didn't want them - simply because your cursor moved over an element on its way to another element - and then obscured the element that you did want data on, so you couldn't get it. They were truly horrible and they drove me crazy. Thank God they're gone.

After that I can forgive FD (almost) anything.
