Mouse controls uplayable.

Bit miffed - waited over a decade for this, I paid the better part of 100 quid, download the game today and the mouse controls are basically unplayable.

It seems like no matter what settings I pick, I am either moving (yaw) incredibly incredibly slowly, or its so super-sensitive & skippy and jumpy that I cant get the reticle on target because it is all over the place even if I move the mouse the tiniest amount.

I have tried flight assist on vs off (I was unable to tell the difference), and I have tried flying in the blue zone but the yaw is still incredibly slow. I am not going to buy a joystick or a controller either. I have fiddled around with the (multiple) sensitivity and deadzone sliders about 200 times but its not really working in any combination.

Unplayable.

Anyone know who I can contact about getting a refund? :(

Hello commander,

The devs have posted before that mouse control is still being worked on. You have waited so long for this game, wouldn't it be better to help provide feedback rather than immediately declaring it to be unplayable (given that you are a longtime fan?)

Even though the mouse controls aren't finalised many commanders play very well with the mouse, This guy does amazing trick flying and uses the mouse.

Sorry to hear that you have this experience, but MS/KB in Elite is some of the best controles ever if you compare to what's out there for the moment. Because I am moving location I can't setup my HOTAS, so I play with this setup. YAW is slow for a reason, so you need to roll and pitch to move.

I can hit the docking slot with 270 in my Cobra and if the controls were broken that would not be possible. Give it some time and you will get there. Or buy a JS :)

Cheers,

Adjust your mouse sensitivity and then practice.

I use keyboard and Mouse just fine.

Check out my videos which are all done with a keyboard and mouse.

I even recently purchased a joystick because it was on sale. I am not inclined to use it for Elite: Dangerous because I am so comfortable with the keyboard.

Ask me any questions and I will try and help.

If anyone else is working out how to request a refund, I found the location of were to request one.

  1. Go to https://store.zaonce.net/ and log in
  2. Top left near the basket is a support option - click it
  3. Click on the "Contact Customer Support" link
  4. Click on "New Ticket"
  5. In the popup, select a problem with the Online Store (not the game)
  6. Select "Refunds & Returns" in the issue type drop down.

Try changing the mouse sensitivity in windows settings. It helps a little bit.
I'm also using keys on keyboard when I have to pitch faster. It's not the best combination, especially in combat, but it's better than nothing.
I hope it will be fixed in the standart beta.

Here is my control setup...

w = Throttle Forward
s = Throttle Back
` = 50% Forward Throttle
TAB = 50% Rear Throttle
X = Zero Throttle
CTRL = Boost (using CTRL means I never accidently hit it)
Shift = Toggle Flight Assist Off/On
A = Yaw Left
D = Yaw Right
Q = Strafe Left
E = Strafe Right
R = Strafe Up
F = Strafe Down
Spacebar = Select Menu Item
WASD = Cycle Through Menu Items
QE = Cycle Back and Forth Between Menu Panels
1 = Target Ahead
2 = Nearest Hostile
3 = Next Hostile
4 = Next Target
6 = Previous Hostile

I use the number keys on the side of my mouse for targeting (ie. 1&4, 2&5, 3&6 are next to each other).

Arrow Keys = Power Management

Mouse 1 = Fire Primary
Mouse 2 = Fire Secondary
Mouse Wheel = Cycle Subsystem

I use the inverted Pitch and Roll mouse setup with a small deadzone.

Also the Yaw is meant to be slow. Slow yaw is a gameplay feature not a control input limitation.

Slow Yaw encourages pitch and roll dogfights. The original Elite had no yaw at all.

You've only had the game one day and because you can't get the hang of it yet, you've decided to give up and want a refund?

I doubt you'll get a refund as you've already used the product.

My advice would be to persevere and watch some YouTube videos by people that have taken the time to practice and become expert with KB/mouse.

This is not a game that you can master in one day.

You cant over-ride the law of the land with a few words on a web site or terms and conditions. Sales in the UK are covered under the Sales of Goods Act saying that goods must be of reasonable quality, fit for purpose and as described.

Also the Distance Selling Regulations were recently modified earlier this year to cover digital game downloads giving you a 14 day period of fulfilment of the contract (i.e. providing the permanent download) to cancel for any reason.

You cant just say "Yeah, well we dont like that law so if you buy this game, the law doesn't apply because we say so."

Anyway - we'll see.

Erm. Yes. You got a digital download copy of the Premium Beta of Elite Dangerous, as described (*Edit* albeit a slight stretch on the accepted definition of the word Beta). Personally, I find it of very reasonable quality and very fit-for-purpose. YMMV :)

Seriously, if you are going to spend £100+ on a game, why not give it some more practice, or go the whole hog, and buy a nice joystick or controller too? :S

PS: The consumer magazine 'Which?' seem to provide a different definition of the 14-day 'cool off' period (or I'm interpreting it differently)... http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/problem/can-i-get-a-refund-on-a-digital-download

Pitch & Roll is the way to go :)

I prefer to use pitch and Yaw. kept getting in a spin with pitch and roll.

I use Keyboard and mouse, but and have set a and d set as roll keys.

Adjusted mouse sensitivity to around 50% and deadzone to near zero.

Find it comfortable to use and having yaw on mouse means can easily adjust target alignment if a little off.

I just tested setups in offline missions till found what worked well for me.
