Movies & TV-series that make you play ED

This is a spin-off from off-topic I started in Imperial Slaves discussion.

Any movies or TV-series you currently watch or recently saw that make you want to play ED? Anything you want to recommend us other ED commanders?

I just recently finished "The Expanse" TV-series that I accidentally found from Netflix. I gave it 5/5.

The very first episode got me hooked. Quite similar cut-throat galaxy (or solar system) feeling as in ED. While I was watching it I wanted to play ED so bad, while playing ED I just wanted to watch the series. But gotta do those CG's...

Anyway if you have means to watch it, go ahead and try the first episode. It has season 1 out and season 2 is in the making if I have understood correctly.

If you have any recommendations feel free to share.

Edit: And remember to use spoiler tags if you feel you are telling too much of the plot :)

Try Babylon 5, 1 st series is a bit slow until you get to the episode "believers"*
But it has 5 major powers, a bunch of minor powers, an evil alien threat from way back and earth being taken over by a dictator.

I'll recommended both Firefly and Dark Matter, featuring crews working in the black, taking on jobs where they can find them. They do the job, then they get paid, so other people can run their little worlds. :)

Dark Matter in particular has the crew working for (and against) corporations. Sounds familiar?

I believe Cowboy Bebop deserves a place in this thread. Not a recent view... it's a classic which everyone should see!

If we could only have that penniless bounty hunter vibe in Elite.... So sad we have billionaire Conda HazRez farming vibe instead....

I'd say that given some of the stranger game mechanics, Buckaroo Banzai would be a good movie candidate. :D

For TV. Space 1999 comes to mind. UFO and B5 are classics.

I actually liked Killjoys. OK it was a second rate imitation of Firefly, but beggars can't be choosers and all that.

As to Space 1999, that how I got into Sci-Fi I think. Probably wouldn't stand up to modern viewing though. :)

I would say the whole first season was below par... Sometimes even cheesy.

From the 2nd season until the very last episode of the last season, its the geatest space opera I have ever seen.

Battlestar Galactica comes 2nd place.

The Expanse at the moment, Farscape is also one of my favourites. Battle Star Galactica was also very good. Firefly/serenity I like. All of these get me in the mood for ED.

Never a big fan of B5.

for me it has to be star trek voyager,whether im out exploring/trading or just giving a lift to some uptight passenger who's demands fall on deaf ears :rolleyes: i just love the whole ... sheilds! ... hail them ..... divert all available power to the weapons..:D

I don't think anyone has mentioned Battlestar Galactica yet? I like how it's combat is more relatable than say trek in that the space combat it's much more familiar to recent modern naval warfare i.e. Mostly Large Carriers with holds full of fighters and bombers as opposed to just phasers and shields. It does have a great story line too even if it draws out some of the interpersonal relationship stuff a bit too much.

Would add my vote for the expanse too it shows promise. What I would give though for HBO to throw their experience and resources behind a space based sci if show. Maybe it will happen some day...

Think I have watched pretty much every show mentioned. For me it's the first Alien Film (1978) Watching the Nostromo land, that scene has stuck in my head since I was a kid. Watching it now makes me want to jump in my T9 and head off into deep space and land on some strange distant world.

I love the old industrial feel in that film, nothing glamorous about space travel, just a crew in an old massive mining ship, far from civilization.

That's the exact reason that made me buy a T9, the landing in Alien. +rep CMDR!

Firefly is the closest parallel I can think of where it's one ship vs the 'verse, doing whatever it takes to make a buck.
But Serenity has no weapons...
