MSI Gaming app

So yesterday I was messing around with my computer and I remembered that my MSI GTX 970 card had presets for overclocking and I wanted to see what it was set on so I downloaded the latest version of the gaming app.

The app had a new button labeled VR ready so I clicked it and the app offered to optimize the computer for VR. I thought, yeah, another useless app that pretends to make the computer run better for gaming. So I clicked on it and I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I put the settings in Elite to Ultra, dropped shadows to off, SS to 1 and that's about all I did. And the game ran fine.

The other day when I did this I has major issues with judder in the galaxy map and mission board. This seemed to come on after playing a while and wouldn't go away until I dropped the settings to medium.

The game runs at 90 unless I'm at a station or on the planet surface when the ASW will kick in. I don't have an issue with ASW unless it is throttling in and out of it. As long it goes into ASW and stays there I don't get the odd artifacts that you do when it's popping in and out. And on the plus side I get to enjoy better visuals.

Nice to see something work well for a change.

I'm pleased to read this. I have a GTX 970 and was wondering if I needed to upgrade it for VR.

Actually it's not quite as high as I thought, but it's still pretty good I may play around with some settings later. The key is to force the ASW to kick in and stay in near stations and planets so the image is clear. Shadows, HMD>1 and SS>1 are things that will bring the 970 to it's knees.

Interesting! So this is the MSI Gaming app, not Afterburner?

I use the MSI gaming app too.. The VR option isn't sticky between each reboot and neither is it as flexible as Afterburner. Its just ON or OFF.

If you want the maximum performance from your GPU you'll want to use Afterburner.

I wasn't looking to get maximum performance, I was just playing around and tried the VR ready button and I was surprised it made any difference. The app works pretty good with the overclock in it and the VR ready does help keep the judders away and allow for the maximum settings I use. I've raised most now to their highest settings. The latest changes are shown in blue. I had environmental quality at Ultra but it did cause some juddering. The game looks good overall, much better than when I was running a combo of low and medium settings. I'm reasonably pleased with it overall and it'll do until Volta/Ampere come out. We should hear more at the end of this month.
