Multiplayer from New Zealand

How will ED handle players in countries such as New Zealand?
If the main server is located in the UK, obviously my ping time will be awful.

So are you doing a tiered system like in SC? IE. The world data is located in a central server but you'll have multiple regional server which handles the combat data. So when I'm fighting someone when I'm in New Zealand, I'll be fighting against others in NZ, Australia and maybe Asia.

HI Telmorial,

As far as I understood:

Multiplayer will be P2P based (Peer to peer) between the players so you will not require a good ping with the UK for good Multiplayer. The Universe server will reside somewhere in the cloud (presumably Amazon UK) and will broker system information and things like that, that do not have that kind of requirements.

I'll let the network savvy guys correct me where I'm totally wrong. ;)

That brings up the question of how P2P handles large distances though. I'd assume (but in reality have no idea) that 2 people playing on a P2P network in the UK will experience fewer issues than 2 playing one in UK, one in NZ.

I'm hoping this might directly affect me within about 6 months :) .

Well... (and I'm partially guessing here). Players will be in an instance together (max instance size currently advertized by FD is 32 human players). The generation of an instance and the algorithms for putting players into an instance will probably be based on how good their interconnectivity will be.

Just wondering... I understand the generally higher importance of ping times, but does anyone have any idea of what the typical data transfer rates are likely to be using this type of P2P system? Especially for those that are 'hosting'?

Some peoples upload rates are likely to be pretty poor I guess. Mine are not stellar, but hopefully adequate.

Yeah, upload speeds currently causes some of networking problems. FD plan to improve this case, and they already have system which doesn't make hosts with weak connections to host NPCs to share with everyone, so they have to download data and upload their own combat data only.

Overall, it will be one meta server system, and there will be geographical matchmaking for "all" group. I speculate that it won't exclude people though, it will just prefer local players first to ensure good play time.

However, in 'closed' group it might be possible to play with guys from UK and New Zealand.
