Multiple accounts

Ok I would like to have 2 characters, one could be out exploring in the far reaches of the galaxy and the other I would like to keep to wing up with friends etc.
I need to buy the game again I realise that but...

Buy a PS4 - you can have all the accounts you want and you only need to pay for the game once.

Okay, you don't have to buy a PS4. I'm just amazed that PC forces you to rebuy ED to have multiple characters.

I have two separate install like this and have even run them muticrew so it has worked fine for me.
I've not run both at the same time for some months now so I'll give it another go over the weekend to see if FD have changed something that breaks it. The only thing that could be an issue for you is the video card. I'm running an 8gig card so I have a lot more memory for GFX.

Just tested it and it does still work for me so I suspect your issue is the low ram on your graphics card. You could try reducing graphics quality and even resolution just to see if that lets you run both at the same time.

Kinda off topic!
Regardless I wanted another account so my grandkids could play with me, Even so, I would agree with you, except; where's the money going to come from to keep the servers rolling, when the devs have finished developing?

I wish I knew what I was getting wrong. I just tried 640X480 low quality and still not able to run both accounts together.
It looks like you may have a point regarding video RAM.
I think I'll take out a ticket.

Frontier Store purchases are not shared amongst PS4 accounts (with the exception of Horizons itself), and I wouldn't be surprised if Frontier makes more money from add-ons and cosmetics than they do the base game.

I'm running Win10 on an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3430 @ 2.40GHz, 2394 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) 8Gb ECC Ram with a 2Gb Nvidia GTX770 graphics card.
When I start the 2nd launcher it starts up fine with the new credentials etc. But when I hit the play button for Horizons, the client window flashes one, then nothing!

Both of my installations are separate but I'm not using Steam.

Just checked to make sure all is as was, I'm currently logged into two separate accounts so still working for me.

Your system is about equivalent to my old system prior to me building my current system (built with VR in mind).

Over time there has been many ways/methods to run two accounts, in that time I never managed to get two accounts running on my old rig, my GTX770 was great for the basic game, but when Horizons came out I found it started to struggle a bit more and heat was becoming an issue.

If I tried to start a second account my system would shut down, this was not due to the power supply. Without seeing what your system is reporting it is hard to say but I would tend to agree with Zed.

I've read this with interest, including the guide linked on the first page.

I really want to run multiple accounts at the same time for testing purposes and also multi-pip cheese. However, I'll admit that I don't really want to be typing in code etc (helpful guide looked a bit too techie for me).

I play on PC (high end, performance should not be an issue).

Is there a simple way to achieve this...?

Well, the simplest thing I can think of is to just use a 2nd computer for the alt account. I used to use my old gaming computer for that purpose until I figured out how to run two instances on my main computer. But 2 on a single computer is done by starting a 64 bit instance, logging out the launcher and starting a 32 bit instance on a 2nd monitor. If you have an old computer laying around, it doesn't need to be very powerful to run Horizons unless you're going to play around planets or stations. On my old computer, I would just fly away from the station to allow for exchange of commodities and such.

If you want to fly the CMDRs from system to system, just use the 32/64 bit method on one computer. You don't need 64 bit to jump or explore. If you need to do any actual flying, you can log the other CMDR to the Main Menu and it won't affect the other one.

Thank you very much indeed for this. I recall that Frontier are dropping 32 bit support or something. Does this put a shelf life on this workaround..?

Locate your ED folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier and copy to a temporary location.
Open the folder and launch the launcher, Select options and (If not already) Log out machine.
Move the folder to it’s final location, Rename folder, open the launcher and log in as you normally would, ensure to select remember password , Verify and create a new shortcut.

To run both simultaneously, Log in one account, close the launcher and log in the other.
Play with settings to find your computers optimal running conditions.
I run 4 comfortably at 1024 x 720 windowed with the lowest setting possible.

Brilliant, thank you.

(Incidentally your font is readable on my mobile but not here!)

Ok success! :¬)
It seems that my "Products" folder was in my User folder which meant that both clients were launched from the same folder despite the program installations being in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier"

Steps taken:
Deleted all references to Frontier _Developments in the HKEY_LOCAL_USER registry. Probably not neccessary but I like to be thorough.
Moved Products & Logs folders from C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\ folder to C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\
Copied C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\ to C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier2\EDLaunch\ and gave Users full control of all subfolders and files in both the original folders and the copies as I suspect that the permissions were the reason for the alternative location for the "Products" Folder.
Started first launcher and started game.
Closed first launcher and repeated for 2nd launcher.
Now have two clients running side by side.

Thanks be to the FD tech. guys for giving me a clue.

Does anyone know if this will work for adding the second account as a crew member? I’d like to let my 4 year old be in my same ship with a VR headset on. She likes looking around the galaxy while I do stuff, but I’d like her to have her own seat in the ship!

Do you think your computer can handle two instances, one of them being a VR simultaneously?
Then yes with 2 seperate installs of the game. You add her as multiplayer to your ship.

When I eventually get around to upgrading my PC, I’m going to start an alt Commander. But CMDR earthtone99 will always be my main/master account on PS4 and PS5 if we get the ability to transfer accounts.

On another note, my avatar is broken, it’s in such a mess I don't know what you can all see. It’s either my eyes, my mouth or my old avatar but seriously stretched... Spaghettification black hole style. I even created the new one at 400px x400px in PShop... Dumb

I think pretty much every thing about running two accounts has already been said... My summary is below but I probably missed a few things.
  • Use a separate email account (suggest making two Gmail accounts with your cmdrname@gmail.com)
  • Save the installations to separate locations on your pc
  • A second monitor is very useful for having an account on each screen. You can select which screen (primary, secondary etc) the account uses. Obviously a decent graphics card helps here... Especially if you are running large monitors.
  • Have separate game loaders linked to each account as shortcuts on your desktop / taskbar... Just click the account you want to run. Note both accounts will need to be updated with every update... Including the launchers.
  • As you only have one set of binds and one hotas, the hotas applies to the active window. Click on the other monitor screen to switch to that account and the hotas controls switch to that cmdr. It's possible to jump one cmdr and then jump the other while the first cmdr is fuel scooping... But much beyond this is hard work as you can only control one cmdr at a time.
  • You can wing (think wing trade dividend here) and multi-crew (think extra power pip here) your cmdrs.
  • The same Bindings work for both accounts as there is only one .binds file for this, although you could copy and rename them and have each account point to different .binds file. I've not tried this personally. Same goes for journal files... All in one save folder.
  • Yes you can transfer goods between your accounts via limpets (LTDs for example) but it is painfully slow to do.
  • D2EA seems to have hit on a way of using wing dividends on FCs though...
  • I doubt it will get patched out in time before FCs go live, so FCs will have a use after all 😗
  • Third party tools like ED Discovery, ED Engineer and EDMC support multiple cmdr accounts, as does EDSM, INARA etc.

What cheating is that?
Multicrew is part of the the game mechanics, as is the wing formation.
I have 3 active accounts, am I cheating?
ETA: and can play 2 accounts at once on laptop & desktop...
Don't feed it... ;)
Got 3 accounts as well and its great for testing (or to play different roles). I don't use them to gain an advantage over someone else though, maybe thats why I still have mine (and you have yours).
