Multiple Commanderes Plea

So the Powerplay Beta is released and I decided to clear my save knowing it won't effect my "real" commander. I have not played ED for a couple of months and I must say I really enjoyed the game again starting from scratch. It also had nothing to do with the new Powerplay features. I think I just enjoyed starting again but knowing straight away what I was doing!

However.........I cannot bring myself to clear my save outside of the beta. 20 million in the bank and 20 million worth of ships. Oh and the effort it took to get there. It is ridiculous really as I'm bored of my commander. For now anyway. Problem is I do not want to just kill him off forever and eject him into eternity!

I just cannot see why we do not have the option to create at least one other commander. Can someone smarter than me please explain why this is such a big deal. I mean, both/multiple commanders would be linked exclusively to the one account. You could only ever have one playing at one time. Other games do this and every "character" created is mutually exclusive and has no influence at all on each other.

Look, I'm open to criticism here and a useful discussion on the subject. If it can be explained why multiple commanders are not possible, either technically or ethically or for whatever reason then I'm all ears. I simply cannot see why it is not possible. Heck I'd even pay a fiver for a new commander "slot"!

Maybe a thought or two from FD would be good too.

Months of requesting this very feature has fallen on deaf ears. Short of....oh hell I don't even know anymore......suffice to say that I'd love to hear why it's not possible and if it is, why has it not been implemented.

Maybe it's Advanced Rocket Science?

I'm in the same (space)boat, I am considering if it is worth deleting my existing commander and starting fresh when PowerPlay hits.

It would be nice to have another CMDR slot instead of deleting and losing everything but if it comes to it it is only virtual money and can be earned again.

I would imagine one commander is to avoid having one person buy the game and then sharing the account with a friend / family member, each using a different save.

I did think of this but it would not be difficult to prevent 2 different PC's playing at the same time. The main account can only be logged in once. At the moment there is nothing stopping a family member logging into my account and playing my commander.

You would think so but lots of other games do the same but don't have that issue.

I imagine the option will appear later but for a monetary contribution "£5" seems about right lol.

Would be great to have a an honest butter wouldn't melt in your mouth CMDR on one profile and a rotten scumbag criminal on the other who has never paid a fine in his life (flying a beat up stolen cobra)

I'd camp Hutton Orbital and kill everyone on sight if I had a 2nd CMDR slot, the only thing that keeps me from doing it is the time it takes take to get there.

I guess people will do the same with common locations like Sagittarius A*, but killing explorers is just mean.

Edit: Great, now I feel bad about possibly killing someone's son.

Coming from someone who didn't stop moaning at the game on first release IMO that the game was released too early with not enough content that we had been promised.
Now I'll eat my words and all good things come to those who wait.
As a kickstart backer I couldn't bring myself to delete my save and loose everything, hence why I had no problem in buying another copy of the game at the weekend to start afresh so I can play the game how I intended too in the first place.
But It still would be nice to have at least 3 Cmdr Slots at some stage.....Please.
PS it is fun having two games running on the same pc at the same time and flying in a wing with myself earning the extra trade bonus, well worth the initial panic at being interdicted in one of them and quickly switching to my wingman for combat!

I am all for multiple commanders as well.

I think with powerplay upon us, it is a must. See, I am also a pen and paper role-player. I like to give my commander a backstory and spice up the in-game events in my imagination. I am typing up the backstory of my current commander for the Lore and Roleplay forum at the moment.

He is a former System Authority Police Force pilot who got shot up and wounded in a space battle and was retired from the service in consequence because of sustained injuries (which led to some cybernetic replacements). Thanks to his disability insurance and the police force retirement plan he was able to afford a civilian Eagle (the Freeagle that came with Mercenary Edition) and he got a Sidewinder (or Loanwinder) from his insurance company. Now he is off to blaze his own trail with his own company "Ashfield's Space Services" that specializes in DD (Delicate Deliveries), RR (Reliable Retrievals) and LL (Legitimate Liquidations). He is more of the law abiding side and works as a lone wolf. He has no reason to resort to piracy or mining or trading.

However I would also like to play a space pirate who preys on NPC traders and does bounty hunter and authority ship kill missions, but I will not do this with my Commander Ashfield for RP reasons.

And with power play I would imagine that people would like to have different commanders to work for different powers.

Buy him his own copy of the game.

Introducing extra CMDRs would have to be done very carefully. Other games have been ruined by allowing this and all the extra grind....

It should be focused round the Login only one PC logged in on that account at any one time, second machine logs in, they warn it's already logged in and will 'kick' the other machine offline if you agree. (Steam already does it for all games.)

Having a couple of alt's would be good even for just when you want to try a new style out or just have a mess around, without risking your main when you want to try something silly that may incur the wrath of the entire Empire. :D

To be honest having 2 separate (Fully paid) accounts as mentioned elsewhere is a much bigger exploit waiting to happen...
Back in my WoW days i had two and would meet up to pass stuff from my Warrior to my Warlock for dis-enchanting etc.

In ED with wings, having two accounts, would create a major with the wings beacon. Sit each account outside to stations and trade away using your beacons whilst sharing the profit on both accounts for very little work.. :(

At least with Alt's you only ever have one character playing at anyone time per account.

Requesting a feature is not a guarantee that is going to be included. Maybe it hasn't fallen on deaf ears and its just something they have no interest in A) doing right now or B) doing at all

On a related note to the above about Multiple accounts...
Anyone remember this Guy? Imagine the same in ED when say 5 wings all attack you simultaneously?????

May I suggest that FD allow the stats of a commander be saved upon deletion if desired so that the progress can be compared to with your new commander. In future maybe save the stats every month or every so many hours of gameplay so that you can see which activity/playstyle is more lucrative to you.
Since the saved ststs are just graphs or spreadsheet then it can be shared in a similar way to people sharing screenshots of the right hand panel to boast about how much they got in one transaction etc. FD or others could run other competitions which would help the exposure.
Having this means that there is still only one commander with the pros that that has without the negative of losing all of your hard work as your old commander will be remembered.

I suspect the complaints about lack of content have probably pushed other features such as multiple CMDR slots down the priority list. I think the API is another sufferer as FD seemed keen on the idea when they started the discussion and then shelved it not long before they dropped the early at Powerplay.

Would love multiple slots myself though.

OP - i'm not sure how a second commander will help you. You say you are bored of him and want to start again, but don't want to lose what you have right? Seems kind of contradictory to me. Its not like there is any differences between commanders. If you want to go back to flying a sidewinder just buy one.

Seems like your issue is more personal that mechanical. Hope this doesn't offend you, its not meant to be, just can't quite get where you are coming from.

I'd love to have at least another commander slot so I can go deep space exploring and still be able to fly with my friends, almost at the point of just buying another copy to do so lol :)

Really? I have two sons who play occasionally. I've got no other games multiplayer or otherwise, where I can't have multiple saves. No way am I buying the game again!

Cheers,

Drew.

I understand that notion, but don't you all want to fly together eventually? That won't work without separate copies anyway. :)
