MWSOG: Milky Way Society of Organics and Geology

There's only one this that really concerns me about the new patch and I can only see it as being a negative for explorers. After some complaints about inventory management it appears that FDEV has caved in and are changing the mat storage system, so rather than having a thousand mats of whatever you want you get to store up to 100 mats of each type, this to me is a negative move. At the moment I discard a lot, that's true, but there's a lot I am a) not interested in, or b) don't need stacks of. For instance I don't need any mats just used for crafting certain types of ammo, so I throw them all away, and I only need a few SRV refuels, and it gets repaired every time it comes into the ship, do I don't need those.

What I do need lots of is jumponium, I currently have 58 premium jumponium injections, but with only a 30ly jump range if I get into a hard area I am going to need them, however it takes 3 niobium for each injection, limiting me to a max of 33 premium injections if I can only carry 100 niobium. But it gets worse, I currently have over 70 standard and basic injections, but that requires a lot of germanium, I have over 200, if they bring in this limit I basically lose nearly half of my jumponium ability. I can only see that as a negative outcome to save a few people a couple of minutes managing their mat store.

With the current system we get flexibility to store extra mats we need and discard those we don't. With the new system I will end up carrying 100's of mats I never use, like zinc.

Oh well, anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I would never thought of that, I think you are the one out of very few who uses the storage like this, normal pilot will need 6 months to gather 200 germanium ;) I am happy with the changes as constantly struggling with storage space and I never remember what I can throw away. Once I bined something that was not used, and then bam! they introduce long range detail surface scanner with this particular stuff needed and it was really really difficult to get some of them back.

There were some other ideas that were more useful, for instance setting a cap filter on mats, set it at 10 for stuff you only need a few of, unlimited for stuff you wanted to keep collecting and 0 for stuff you didn't want any of, once it's set up you can forget about it. The cap of 100 for each material seems to me to be an unnecessary dumbing down.

Nothing in this game will make everyone happy, I can see some purists unloading trucks full of salt on your idea on "unlimited storage" for some materials . As the guy who needs 50 boosted jumps in the row you are a very unique pilot, and there is a price for that :)
For me being able to plot 20000ly jurney with neutron boost took lots of adventure away (I have not got enough of will power to not use it), but what can I do, I know is good for most of pilots, so be it.

I didn't really mean unlimited storage, that would be silly, the unlimited just means keep collecting until storage is full, I think 1000 is fine. Personally I'm not against changes, but changes to a system that is already working well should be tweaks, not substantially change the entire way it works which is what they are doing. At the moment it's flexible but awkward, what they are doing is changing it to inflexible but easy, and it doesn't have to be inflexible to be easy.

Brain Trees will be great too. I know for a fact that each Brain Tree site has 4-5 Phloem Excretions that yield very rare materials.

True that. Thinking of that so will be bodies with lots of ejecta craters in the bubble will be useful as there is always a rock or two in the middle, so rather then driving for hours you can visit 5 or 6 of those and probably get what you need. It does require some skill of navigating by the surface map, not easy for casual player...

I totally get your point. For me either way will be an improvement. Why FD does it this way I don't now, sometimes there are reasons we do not see, for example possible exploits.

I won't like it for the same reasons. When I'm out round the edges I like to keep my stock levels at at least 60 premium and 50-60 standard which on the current recipe is 230-240 niobium. I have well over 100 of the other injection ingredients on hand as well.

(I do keep half a dozen SRV repairs on hand, I've been able to save the buggy a few times by repairing while rolling down a cliff...)

After that first quick and easy find Ive been putting in a few hours searching for more in various systems. Its getting bloody annyoing when I see that small blue dot and it turns out just to be some mining extraction outpost.

Geysers have unique POI that looks like a few pixels when scanner is on maximum range, so you can ignore all different ones when looking for geysers.
One important advice would be to jump around the body, do not stick to the same area. Maligno found the place where there was like 15 sites on the northern hemisphere and only 1 on southern (or vice versa), so if you are in place like this and you will stick to the south then it will be very fruitless search

Still in the Flyae Flyuae OK-A c29-84 system that CMDR Arnul discovered, and checking the system map I see some bodies yet to be tagged, so I thought as long as I am here why not bag and tag em?

Well it turned out to be a nice collection of bodies indeed!

The first one I checked is B 3 a, a 761km radius body with major vulcanism and both germanium and polonium, should make a good pit stop for jumponium resupply. Well the first thing I did of course is to check out a splash crater, just in case, not much chance really, and I was right, no brain trees, but I did harvest the small rock I found. Out of 6 fragments I picked up 12 germanium, very promising start. I only had a few minutes left so off I went and selected a likely looking spot to glide over. So as I am gliding I see a prime spot just to my right and curve that way, only to drop out of glide just before reaching it. Time to go so I head down towards a nice flat spot facing the way I intending searching when I come back, and as I am around 600m from landing what do I spot right in the centre of my canopy?

Yep a little tiny puff of smoke. Lucky indeed, I land and collect a stack of germanium and polonium and log off, but I figure one volcanic site isn't enough, if you are flying in a group more is better, so off I go next time I am on and in a few minutes find another one, this one is unfortunately on the edge of a cliff, not a good location for harvesting mats, so I need a third, and 2 glides later there it is! I read the new planetary colours are going to help us find geysers...yeah right I'm thinking, like I need help, they keep jumping up in front of me!

The third site appears to be best for collecting germanium and polonium.

Flyae Flyuae OK-A c29-84 B 3 a, : Metallic Magma Volcanism, -2861.81, -657.03, 38612.66, 38724.14ly from Sol.

Site 1: Lat -40.52, Lon -65.94
Site 2: Lat -1.56, Lon -16.48
Site 3: Lat -30.19 Lon -171.13

Now there's more to come, we have Polonium and Germanium, C 5 a has niobium and major vulcansim so I am now checking that out, I have one site so far and it's a far smaller moon so there should be more coming.

fly safe all.

Very nice! Since the sites are jumping out at you, maybe you should do another planetary survey ;)

Regarding the new mat storage system, another thing is that it will put a serious cap on is the number of engineering rolls you can do in one sitting. I'm sure it will annoy a good number of people. Unless, of course, the engineering schematics are changed as to need fewer mats...the same goes for synthesis recipes, if they get rid of or reduce the 3 niobium requirement, then it might address your concern.

One thing we need to do first, a priority in fact. The livestream suggested that the new planetary colouring tech will allow us to pick out areas of volcanic activity, we need to get a screenshot of the changes and then overlay the locations from one of our fully surveyed bodies with many sites and compare that to the old image, that way we may be able to pick out what we need to look for after the changes. Unfortunately I am a huge distance away from any of the surveyed bodies so I will have to leave that to someone else :|

Indeed planetary survey has been calling, but my planetary surveyor, Starbows End is in the bubble. It will have to wait.

I just spaced it and ended up burning up at a star, so my journey to the center is getting postponed, 9,000 ly and the data gone. I'm back near the bubble now and I think I'm in the area I should be in when beta drops. So, I'll be taking some of those t ypes of shots if need be. Man I'm burthurtt over that stupid action of mine. haha. But perhaps it's for the best, now I'll be able to start that journey over with some good planets once live drops.

I know, I have suffered some damage after losing focus when fuel scooping, it's not a big issue at the moment, but I was wondering whether to head back to Colonia to drop off all my data rather than heading on to BP, I'm 36kly out from Sol, probably close to 20k from Colonia, but in the direction I've come out I am still probably that much from BP. Heading into Colonia and parking my ship there while I kick about in the beta is tempting, then doing the BP run after the live drops. I think that's a plan, when beta drops it's a couple of weeks back in the timeline so I can't do any pics here for comparison. Of course I could just plant my ship here on the surface and do the beta then get my fresh screenshots after live drops, the beta is only 5 days away after all. Hmm, thinking...........

I was thinking about same thing, but then the Q4 will drop and the worlds will REALLY look better, so no point waiting for any of that, I will just follow my plan :)
I am not sure, but maybe Fuel Rats can repair your hull now? I would ask, few months ago I crashed descending to the geyser site and was finishing my trip with 36% of the hull and it did not feel good...

Oh no hull is fine at 97%, and that was only because I forgot to switch power to shields before touching down a trifle hard, I didn't actually crash into the star, I just got a little....hot. Some internals suffered a bit of damage, but they all appear to be still working fine. Of course I fly without an AFMU to save weight :D

That explains a lot, because actually AFMU has no weight :D

On the other note, found a new fungal cones. I was finding them in canyons only, so when I saw a POI on the corner of my scanner on a flat plane I was about to ignore it, but in the last second I changed my mind and here we are:

Eock Bluae OO-R b5-0 C 1 -6.4676 -58.3539

Another lesson for me to never give up. When it showed just on the edge it looked more like a medium POI I never check, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt and it paid of.
