My Auto-dock Is Trying To Kill Me..

For the fun of it, take a Viper MkIII (with a Docking Computer) to an Outpost, request dooking clearance at around 7KM out, throttle back to zero and hang on! Boost, boost, slingshot around the station, aim at the pad, boost, spin, lower landing gear, CLANG! "Docking success", (now, where is the ruddy toilet!). 50 seconds if it is running slowly.

Auto-docking computer confidence only about 90%. Tries to kill pilots 10% of the time.

That may sound dramatic, but I've noticed that, when I set auto-dock in motion I'll usually phase out for a minute or so while it gently guides me in.

On rare occasions though, I'll move away from the screen altogether and then it strikes!

I watched tonight, whilst docking at Ito Orbital in Rhea, as my ship moved toward the postbox slot. Glanced away for a minute, only to turn back and see my ship repeatedly ramming itself into the side of the station.

Now, I've seen many threads about the auto-dock being bugged at times or not quite perfect but mine genuinely seems to have murderous tendencies. Maybe I've led it on and not followed through, or made drunken promises that I don't remember. Anyone else have similar problems?

The auto-docking computer (Otto?!) is about 90-95 percent perfect. That being said, it is about 5-10% trying to kill you. You cannot simply hand the ship over to Otto and walk away or you will end up paying through the nose for your inattention. Otto seems to have a "preferred entry envelope": not too-fast or too-slow, likes to be aimed at or just off the mail-slot, begin around 6k+ out. I am working on disabling BOOST during Otto-use so it doesn't BOOST me into the walls, it has a tendency to do that BTW and if you hand over control to Otto and the first thing it does is BOOST, be aware you may have to grab the controls back to keep from getting slammed into a wall or hung up in the toaster-rack, but you won't know for sure until the last 5 seconds or so before impact. If that happens you have about a minute to get out or be "cleared" from the mail-slot (i.e.: destroyed) by the station lasers. Throw it into full-reverse throttle (not reverse-thrusters, reverse-THROTTLE!) until clear of the entry, then re-zero the throttle and Otto will take over again or, get thru the mail-slot, then hand it back over to Otto (zero the throttle) who can, at that point park it for you.

But: Get Gud. The Auto-docking computer is a great short-term tool for showing you the correct line-up to get thru the slot but can make a pilot lazy with continued use and a lazy pilot is a poor pilot. Replacement ships ain't cheap. Get Gud at slot-running and switch it out for cargo racks.
