My Big Complaint About Odyssey's Mat Grind

I am trying to find the beauty in Odyssey, warts and all. But there is one humungous factor about it that drives me crazy, and makes me want to stop playing entirely:

The mat grind REQUIRES illegal activity.

Okay okay, not the end of the world. But in a game that up until now has allowed me to go about my business as a law-abiding Commander, it is really upsetting that everything I do in Odyssey results in illegal activity. I can count on one hand how many times I've received a fine, let alone a bounty, prior to Odyssey. Now? I visit the penal colony almost every session, and I have outstanding fines in half a dozen areas. Why? Because I'm trying to steal power regulators and hack into data terminals.

Frontier, why the hell is there no way to get power regulators legally? You know, that thing that you require for EVERY UPGRADE IN ODYSSEY! How the hell did this go unresolved? Jesus, give us a way to do pirate settlement raid missions or SOMETHING so that we can get these resources without racking up tons of fines or going to the penal colonies!

One could argue that you can get PR as mission rewards… until you find out how many you need to upgrade a single suit to G5 and you usually get only 1 piece as mission reward (even for missions from an allied faction).
Add the fact that you are unable to remove mods from suits so you will be upgrading many of them.

I tried to do crash sites and other POIs to get the regulators, I did.
After long hours I ended up with 24 degraded and ONE SINGLE working power regulator.

I totally understand you and I think the current situation is stupid.

yeah,

i was a commander who tried hard not to cause harm ... horizon dropped and i started having to do harm to mechanical things and i gained combat rank
i did by accident have a crash in the mail slot but, that was one time ... my combat rank is from killing skimmers, not npc ships or real commanders

and now in odyssey all that is out the window ...
im now a foot soldier and doing crime?

what happened to make your own path?
i guess if you wanted to do that you couldnt partake in the new dlc's,as they didnt include those type of players (clean/law abiding) ... they made it so you had to get your hands dirty, so to speak.

i just took a legitimate settlement raid (not the purple illegal ones) and i had to clear 21 enemies ... well, i get to 15 no problem and then the interior bad guys start shooting me and i kill them and get fined, i get bounty on me and now i have to turn myself in. for what? doing a legitimate mission?

i just dont get ... lucky i have a billion to waste on fines and what not, huh?

i was going to upgrade all 3 suits and 3 guns ... now, im not really feeling that anymore.
the mats are all rng and are all over the place making the game boring.
i spent a day looking for 5 materials ? that is really, really boring!!

Watch for concourse mission givers with those as a reward, then haggle for a higher reward.

That's a good point but it doesn't solve the fact that the engineering in Odyssey is (once again) a pain in the behind.

I feel a little rant incoming so feel free to stop reading.

They adjusted the engineers with players feedback in Horizons because FDev's original implementation was horrible (mats and data dropping in 1, mats being cargo, engineered modules could end up worse after applying an upgrade, mats and data not being tradable and so on...)
All this was fixed after feedback.

They adjusted the Guardian grind upon players feedback because FDev's original implementation was again horrible (awful amount of components needed, drop rate very low).
This was once again fixed and improved with feedback.

And then, for some inexplicable reason they do it for the third time... while still claiming they respect the players time.
Data not being tradable, data dropping in 1, RNG being very very very bad, the sheer amount of mats and data needed (40 opinion polls, hello!?), wait time of 300 seconds for data transfer...
It's like we are the square 1 again.

So this feedback will hopefully be taken into account by FDev so that they could (once again) improve their vision of the gameplay of the game they don't even play.
If they did, it would look different.

Sorry for the rant.

I'm in the same boat. The grind is unbearable, even if you play 2 to 3 hours per day. The drop rate for rare mats is abysmal (4 Opinion Polls in 3 weeks "normal gameplay").

Never before in Elite i got so many fines and had to abandon or failed so many missions.

It's possible to get everything you need without getting caught (if the fines/penalties upset you).

It's actually possible to get everything you need without doing anything illegal too. Including power regulators.

If you'd like some tips on how, please shout up and we'll be happy to help you.

Crash site. Land. Cut. Grab. Relog.
Yep, what a fine gameplay loop (once more).

I find some of the new missions quite fun, in paticular if you try to do them in a more stealthy / non lethal way (when it is possible), but i haven't got into the regulator grind yet.
Though I totally agree with the whole grind not being fun, this could be bearable if the mods could be equipped/unequipped like ship modules do...

Also, i agree there should be more lawful mission (more mission types anyway), like fitting a passenger cabin on your ship, go to an attacked settlement and get hostages out of here.

We now have ship/srv/foot gameplay, but they feel too separated at the moment (come on fdev, use a tiny bit your imagination please).

I would also like to have more variety in npcs/stations. Why do we have the same npcs and the same decorations in imperial / federal / anarchic stations. Also, mission givers should not be there in the concourse asking for illegal stuff in high security systems ...
