My Elite: Dangerous Review is up over at MMORPG.com

Nice review, and on a site I frequent too which is nice to see. Pretty honest statements there which I like to see, I'd be more likely to give it a 6 given the current features with a possible 8/9 depending on how quickly they add some proper social systems ingame (if they ever do)

All the expansions sound lovely and all but presently I'm not that fussed about landing on a planet when the game leaves me feeling like I have zero affect on the systems which I've been playing in since release (maybe 2-3 other players visit these systems btw)

Thought I'd be able to provide certain commodities and as a result get much lower prices for second commodities based on rep etc. All changeable with patches but its all a big ? at the moment.

Nice review and rep anyway :)

Since you ask, my review of your review:
It's coming from the right place, a gamer's place, and I agree with many of the points made. They are made well, in entertaining style, and there's a sense of a long-term perspective.

My own score for the game would be an 8 because I want to build in my expectations for the future, without going overboard. In other words, 7 is probably at the low end of my range, but I have high confidence that ED will keep developing at the the same pitch of quality they've already achieved, though it won't be instant as some people demand. It seems like a reasonable expectation based on results so far. But context-free numbers mean different things to different reviewers.

On a technical note, I think you're a good writer but if I could change one thing it would be to arrange a light copy edit by someone else before publishing, as there are a few small errors and grammar wobbles that can be easily fixed, or at least pointed out, with a fresh pair of eyes. This process will quickly improve your work more generally. Then language nerds like me will get through a whole piece without tutting.

So, with high expectations of your work in the future, I give your review 8/10.
8.5 with a copy edit. Overall, I would buy it. If it was for sale. Which it isn't.
:D

Great job on that review Khavi. First seeing the walls of texts was a little discouraging with my small attention span, but added with the beautiful screenshots, and gamer jokes it made for a nice read. Even though this game has hyped you up to the max you still gave a very calm and balanced review on all aspects and gave your honest opinion on a lot of whats to come. Again, nicely done!

It is hard to temper enthusiasm with honesty. I would honestly be a little less honest, and give it an 8. But then again we can't all be sorted out the same way. It was a good piece, now I am at peace. Or maybe not. For honesty is still not hard at work. Thanks for sharing, almost missed it. The visitors at that site is a bit rough at times, so I've not been there a lot lately. Where "lately" might easily go into half-decades or more. But it was not an eyesore, he swore. :)

Good review and attitude, only thing I disagree with is the comment that ED is unforgiving listed as a "con". I for one like it that way. I am really sick of hand holding, no death penalty, insta res, everything on a plate, games. For me at least the unforgiving part should go in the "pro" list. I have had so many moments in game where I KNOW I am pushing my luck, but just about get away with it, its those type of moments that make the game into Elite Dangerous, and to make it more forgiving, would surely take those moments away from the game, and would diminish it greatly.

That's a "pro" for me too. It's Dark Souls in space, including lots of sun praising. If only there was more jolly cooperation...

Great review, I'd only object to a couple of the cons (steep learning curve and being unforgiving) that I'd put in the pros :)

Hey, thanks for the comments. I really appreciate you all taking the time to read it. A couple of you mentioned the cons I had listed. I know for some of us we wouldn't list those as personal cons, but for the average MMO gamer, they are very much a con. I've been writing about and covering video games since 1999. Back in the day, people didn't really mind the challenge of a tough game. Things have changed since then and two of the biggest gripes I hear coming from the average gamer is - game is too hard and too much to have to learn. Take Elite for instance. That game, too, has a pretty steep learning curve and it is very unforgiving. Elite is really no different. How many times have we heard that players have lost billions in credits - since the games release? It's become a kind a joke on this message board(just saw a post the other day, made specifically about this, asking when the next person was going to post about losing an ASP and millions in trade goods). So in my opinion, based on my knowledge of MMO's and gamers, those two would be a con to the average MMO gamer. Maybe not a flight sim enthusiast - but definitely your average Joe and Jill MMO gamer. :)

Seems like a good and fair review, and, unlike a lot of other reviews I've seen (both professional and users on metacritic) I agree with the score. It should have a far steeper learning curve and difficulty though. 'Tis not Elite: Dangerous at present. :)

Honest question: What makes a game an MMO in your eyes?

I'm a gamer - I like MMO's best of all(though recently I have been playing Skyrim(still) and Elite). I know where you are trying to go with this question, so I'll answer that. In my opinion Elite is not quite a true MMO - yet. It doesn't have the necessary community and social tools we generally associate with an MMO type game. Until Frontier puts them in place, I think Elite is a wannabe MMO, but currently plays more like a co-op game.

Don't think it will happen, but how did it influence eve and what is twitch shooting, and what MMO person don't like fps?

Very nice read. I can say that after playing for a little while now I conform to most of your views and impressions. Keep up the writing, very sound and spot on!

The stars just stuttered in their paths. mmorpg.com called Elite: Dangerous an MMO.

How did Elite influence EVE? EVE was first a board game based loosely on Elite. The developers of EVE in many interviews have stated that EVE was very heavily influenced by Elite in the creation of EVE and is what drove them to finally take EVE from a board game to an online computer game. :)

Twitch shooting(or FPS - first person shooter) requires a players own agility skill, where as most MMO's click on target, lock target, then spam hotkeys. And from many polls on various MMO gaming websites - your average MMO player does not like FPS style combat - they think it takes away from the RPG aspect of the game and some feel FPS straight up doesn't belong in an MMORPG and should be left to FPS shooter type games. I'm not making this stuff up. I've been writing about MMORPG's since before the Internet was even an Internet. :)

It is an MMO, as much as Elder Scrolls Online is an MMO. Elder Scrolls uses a similar technology. Only so many people in an instance at a time(I think the max is 64). Everyone is in one huge game world, just as we're all in the same game world in Elite. We're just in different instances of that game world. What Elite needs to make it a true MMO though is add the social and community tools that are associated with that type of game. If they do that - then there is no doubt that Elite will be an MMO.

BTW do you think EVE will ever have millions or even hundreds of thousand players playing at the same time? If you do you're delusional. Elite is a niche' game. It will never have the numbers that a general MMO like Warcraft has. So if you're whining because you don't see thousands of players in the same area as you at any given time - you never, ever will - ever. The game world is too big, and there are too few people playing. That is the reality of it.
